This is the time of year when juicing just about anything sounds really good. Oranges, lemons, limes — how about a fresh orange juice spritzer or a bucket of limeade? Yes please. We have some small juicers but we're interested in hearing how you juice industrial quantities of lemons or limes. Do you have this KitchenAid attachment? Have you ever tried it? What did you think?

i have it and it sucks. it feels like im gonna break the engine whenever i use it. and it makes horrible squeaking noises. boo!

I think I am getting old and grumpy but so many of these labour saving devices just seem like overkill. They take up a lot of space for a very limited function.
I understand a general purpose food machine or cuisinart type thing that does a lot of chopping, dicing, shredding etc. but I like do some things by hand like squeezing oranges and mixing doughs.

My KA food processor came with a juicing attachment. It looks a little clumsy, but man does it work. Haven't used it on smaller citrus like limes, but it spins through lemons, oranges and grapefruit lickety-split.

I have one. I think it is pretty good if you have to do a few lbs of citrus. The biggest problem is that the pulp gets caught in the plastic strainer and you have to rinse it every 5-min. Not as bad and by hand though and you do get ALL the juice.

This attachment is one of the few KA attachments that's just not for me. I continue to use the glass reamer that my mother and grandmother used before me. There aren't many things that survived wartime, and emigrating to America, and it's one that I really treasure (funny what people choose to hold on to!).

If you're going to do massive amounts of juicing, a machine just seems logical. But I'm not a dedicated juicer so a hand one would work fine for the 1 maybe 2 times a year I would use it.

I was going to say the same thing if your juicing a case of oranges then yes its worth it but it's to much work I think a small hand juicer is fine for me i'm juicing lemons most of the time anyway. I love kitchenAid but not this accessory. It's a shame that viking has the contract now on foodnetwork a lot of shows that i see everything is viking, and i really don't like the look of their mixers.

really is it that hard to turn your wrist? Even if you have a lot of juicing to do?

I have my grandmother's vintage version (glass backplate) and it still works great.

I use an old glass juicer that was my fiance's mom's when she was young. It's probably older than me, but it works just fine. Even for juicing 30 lbs of lemons, which I've done several times this year, thanks to all my friends with lemon trees.

i have an old KA mixer from 1950. i got it at an estate sale and it came with a box of attachments, including the juicer. i love it! i don't use it if i'm just juicing one lemon or lime, but i love greyhounds and juicing a few grapefruits by hand is a real pain.
it's a bonus that the juicer is glass and the straining basket is an actual little metal mesh basket that hangs on the end of the juicer. it's pretty charming and easy to clean.
there are some photos of it in action here: http://threadtrace.wordpress.com/2009/03/29/juicing-with-my-vintage-kitchenaid-mixer/

I suppose if you have enough space to justify keeping your mixer out and ready to use at a moment's notice, then its not so bad... though even then you still need to assemble this thing. Why not just get a reamer or one of those hand powered juicers? This seems like a toy for people with a ton of disposable income (in this economy??) who are afraid of being caught playing with Transformers.

My KA came with a free attachment, and I picked the juicer because I love having fresh OJ. I have to say though, I think it's a lot more trouble than it's worth. It does work well in the sense of getting a lot of juice out of the oranges. But I have a couple problems with it. First, it rips the pulp out of the fruit while it juices, and then the little thing for catching and straining out the pulp clogs pretty quickly and you have to keep cleaning it out. Second, partly because it's so big, I always seem to get juice everywhere, much more so than with a normal juicer. And finally, assembling it and everything just isn't worth the trouble unless you have a LOT of fruit to juice. So overall, I'm not real thrilled with it, though it does make good orange juice.

thaddius hit the nail on the head. It's not worth setting up to squeeze juice fro one or two pieces. It's kind of handy if you are juicing a large qty, but the hassle of cleaning that strainer out diminishes it. Frankly, I wouldn't bother buying one if you don't already have one.
