Five Practical Kitchen Designs from Tomas Kral

2009_03_20-Kral02.jpg2009_03_20-KralThumbs.jpgWe just came across Tomas Kral's portfolio of kitchen tool designs, and we love his practical yet whimsical sensibility. Take a look at five designs that have real potential for use in the kitchen!

We love looking at designers' portfolios and prototypes for new kitchen gadgets, but we're often left a little cold by the lack of potential for really practical applications. They may look cool, but they're not going to work in a real kitchen. Kral's designs, on the other hand, seem to have some real functional possibilities.

• 1 Lap Counter - This lap bowl and counter lets you work on chopping and prepping food even while seated. This could be a real practical help for those with disabilities or those who cannot stand at the counter for long periods of time.

• 2 Sugar Please! - This is a beautiful table sugar dispenser (comes in porcelain, aluminum or glass) that works with the principle of weight. The central doser automatically replaces any sugar you remove from the outer plate.

• 3 Modullo - A modular vase, pitcher, or cup. Build what you need.

• 4 Molecule - A beautiful double carafe for water and wine, or vinegar and oil, or whatever else you'd like to keep around.

• 5 Jetspoon - This may be the most intriguing tool in the bunch. The spoon can hold water. We're not sure if this is to cool it down, which might be helpful for pastry-making and such, or if it's to help measure and distribute water into dough evenly.

What a cool tray for peeling potatoes! So functional! And the color rocks too. The question is, how do you store this thing?

I don't know about the tray for peeling potatoes. Looks cool, but storage for something like this might be a pain for those who live in small spaces. It doesn't collapse, it's not particularly small, and it's shaped oddly, so stacking might be more cumbersome.

re: the jetspoon -- it allows you to simultaneously beat and add liquid.

A pretty cool industrial designer from Prague.

Where can I get the lap tray, I really need it bad!!!!! I went to the link but I don't know where to order it. It would work perfect for preping produce from the garden outside and then dumping the remains in the compost. I really need it (and I want it too).

I'm in love with the lap counter. I don't need it so much as want it. Didn't really think of the storage issues.

The lap counter is such a wonderful idea! I can't tell you how many times I've tried to approximate something similar with a plastic bag and a big bowl. It's a lot of fun to be able to sit around with everyone else in the living room and still be snapping beans, peeling potatoes, etc.

I have a tiny kitchen with no room but I would still absolutely make space for this! What a shame that it's only a concept.

I love the idea of the jetspoon. Just last week I'd been making some pies and thinking of how to perfect adding water to the dry ingredients.

Hope to find it soon!

Me too, love the lapcounter! Instead of spending ages in the kitchen peeling potatoes and preparing other veggies for cooking, you could just sit in the living room with the rest of the family or visitors!

I disagree about the lapcounter. I think it would be back breaking to sit with a weight of potatoes like this.

Lap counter. More trouble than standing and peeling potatoes into a bowl or cutting board and then just disposing of the peels. I mean how bloody lazy can you get?

Water in a spoon handle? Only one position for that sucker. Up. If you forget, just wipe the mess you made for being such an idiot to think that is useful when a plain measuring cup will do.

The sugar dispenser is a bug feeder which will do well in the fridge and form a nice hard ring.

The two remaining designs? Who cares, just throw money away.

How desperate are people to make a buck. How foolish are people to buy that stuff?

click212 - the spoon has a cap to keep the water in. I think it's a pretty cool design that I'd totally give as a gift to a friend who bakes a lot.

And, I could be lazy enough to use that lap board. Though the high-ish lip on the edge might drive me nuts after the 3rd time of hitting my wrist on it.

I know a couple of disabled family members who might find this very useful. Also, a lot of people have jobs where they stand all day...maybe they'd like to take a load off at the end of the day. Sitting doesn't equal lazy.

Sorry, that was in response to click212 and in reference to the lap counter.

It's not so much laziness as wanting to be social. I can certainly see the TV from my kitchen, and even talk to my husband if I yell, but here's something very nice about being able to hang out together after a long day, so I love sitting near him while getting stuff ready for dinner or the next day's lunch.

Sure, I could drag him in the kitchen as well, but we have a tiny kitchen and there really isn't room for two. And he'd rather relax after being at work all day anyway.

I think the lap tray idea is great too. An alternative to this tray could be those colorful plastic trays you can find at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. You know the ones with the large plastic pockets on each side. You could put your unpeel or snapped vegs in one side and the peel or snapped in the other side. Seems like you could slice and dice on it too. After dinner the kids could sit on the floor and use the tray to color. Later that evening you could use the tray to hold your soothing tea while relaxing in bed reading a nice novel. With that much action, you will never have to store it!
