My great-grandmother's chocolate cake. Apparently my grandmother made hundreds of chocolate cakes, trying to duplicate the taste that my grandfather remembered from childhood.

One year my grandmother was sorting through a bunch of family papers and found a handwritten recipe for chocolate cake, so she baked it without telling my grandfather where it came from. His took one bite and exclaimed with wide eyes, "This is it!"

It became the standard cake for birthdays when I was a kid, and this year my mom baked the cake and FedExed it across the country for my birthday. It was like my happy childhood had been delivered to my doorstep.

She would keep them in a big plastic baggie, and we'd always take out a couple each morning and stick them in the microwave.
