I've always been curious. How do companies -- especially big companies -- judge recipe contests? Do they make *every* single one?

If anyone knows, tell me so I can sleep at night. Thanks!

I work for a magazine that runs one of the largest food contests in the nation and they do not make every single entry. First, if the form is filled out wrong or if the recipe isn't submitted the *exact* way the rules say, it is thrown out. Unfortunatley, it does discount many good recipes. We have food experts on staff that can read a recipe and know if it is 1. creative 2. tasty 3. needs to go to the test kitchen for testing. One main idea to win is that it doesn't have to be complicated to be good. You may also be interested to know there are people who enter cooking contests for a living (they look at the sponsor product and then come up with a recipe) but it is almost as likely that an "average joe" could win. Hope that helps. :)

Does it have to be ice cream or are sorbets allowed?

kf - Cool!! Thanks. I didn't realize there was a response here until now but that's great. :-)

Now on to my next question: how do they write the dictionary? :-P

Sleeping more soundly tonight for sure...zzz...

So, who won the 2006 contest? I clicked on the tags and also did a search, but can only find the recipe descriptions.
