One More Thing... ICE CREAM CONTEST

2006_07_21-ice-cream-dog.jpgPeople... we haven't gotten a single entry yet for the The Best Lick! Ice Cream Contest, so I can tell you the competition is not that fierce. Don't be afraid!

We need your entries by August 14th, and by entries, we mean a well though-out and tested recipe, along with a photo and a few lines about your inspiration, etc. Read all about it on the contest page, and jump in the fray; the waters are cool and kind.

I've only made ice cream once before. I've been doing some research, stocking up on ingredients . . .and I'm going into my kitchen tomorrow to start some tests. Ice cream seems like a big challenge -- since you make the custard, then put it through the machine and then cure it in the freezer.

Last night I went to Sundaes & Cones in the East Village. I tasted blueberry sorbet and sesame seed ice cream and then got a scoop of mint chocolate chip and a scoop of cherry vanilla. I found that, especially for the cherry vanilla, the butter taste of the fat is stronger than the taste of the flavor itself. I only tasted cherry when I was directly biting into a large chunk of cherry.

I bet the winner of the contest will do better than that.

Chris,

Don't be scared. If you don't want to mess with the custard bit, there are plenty of ice cream techniques that don't use eggs and stove-top preparation. Check out the Basic Lemon Sorbet recipe:

for an idea of how easy it can be to make a frozen dessert sans fuss. Next week I'll post a cream-based ice cream recipe that doesn't use eggs or cooking. It's a real beauty.
