Text Message for Safe Fish

2008-02-13-fish-phone.jpgWe love our wallet card and all, but the information on sustainable seafood changes so rapidly, if you don't remember to download the new one each season, you can be left at the fish monger wondering what's safe and what's not. Surprisingly, fish mongers are not always up to date on these issues, and why should they be if it means selling less fish? Let us count the ways... (Business idea: sustainable seafood fish monger!)

Yesterday we read in Mark Bittman's great new blog, Bitten, that the same organization that makes our favorite seafood wallet card is now offering a sustainable seafood text messaging service.

It's easy: text 30644 with the message FISH and the name of the fish in question. Within a few seconds, you'll get a text back with Blue Ocean's current assessment and better alternatives to fish with significant environmental concerns.

I just tried Monkfish and got the following:

"monkfish; (YELLOW) some environmental concerns; try farmed rainbow trout, or U.S. farmed tilapia instead."

Okay, so it's not terribly detailed, but still informative. When you get home you can kick back and read the full report (here's monkfish).

(Thanks, Mark!)

Good fish mongers will always be up to date on the issues.

After all, they are increasing their chances of a sale if they can provide you, the conscientious cook, with a conscientious product.

it would be nice if they gave better suggestions. farmed tilapia kind of tastes like nothing but monkfish is totally delicious
