Conscientious Cook: Fundraising Brunch for The People's Grocery

2006_12_01peoples.jpgAttend a fundraising brunch on Saturday, December 9th and make a real difference in the food justice movement. Weve talked about The Peoples Grocery before.

Based in Oakland, California, its a community based food justice organization whose mission is to develop a self-reliant, socially just and sustainable food system in West Oakland though community based, youth focused and innovative social enterprises, urban agricultural projects, educational programs and public policy initiatives...

The Peoples Grocery started in 2002 with a mobile market on wheels. The market was launched because there are no grocery stores in West Oakland where people can buy fresh food, let alone natural and organic foods.

The organization now runs numerous community and school gardens and ag programs; offers gardening, nutrition and cooking classes to children and adults; delivers healthy snacks to local schools; and offers a bulk buying program to make natural and organic foods more affordable to its members.

Presently the mobile market is on hiatus while the organization grows and looks for a new permanent space. Peoples Grocery hopes to launch a freestanding grocery store in 2008. Read all about it on the founders blog.

You can help with all this by attending the fundraising brunch donating online, or volunteering.

The People's Grocery is extraordinary! If you are unfamiliar with who they are, take a moment and read about them.
