Conscientious Cook: Food Aid for Kenya

2008_01_11-Kenya.jpgWe have been following the news from Kenya closely these past two weeks as the violence and upheaval disrupts what is normally a very stable region. We have been particularly troubled by the reports that many urban neighborhoods and rural areas are experiencing crisis food shortages.

ReliefWeb reported yesterday that the 250,000 people displaced from their homes this month are experiencing a very high level of food insecurity as they flee from violence and take shelter in churches and schools. The instability also interrupted the maize harvest, and ReliefWeb estimates that as much as 20% of the harvest was left behind. This was after a shorter than expected rain season which already lowered crop yield.

The UN World Food Program just made their first ever delivery to Nairobi, but other delivery attempts by food assistance programs have been interrupted by violence.

The UN says that up 500,000 people may need food aid in Kenya for months.

"As people concerned with food and cooking we have been troubled by the reports that many neighborhoods and areas are experiencing crisis food shortages."

Um, guys? Strange way to put it, don't you think? I mean, I assume that you would be concerned whether you were foodies or not.

Perhaps you meant that the kitchen blog was a good platform for this cause?
