Conscientious Cook: Support a Farmer With Us At Kiva

2008_02_22-Kiva.jpg

Kiva is one of the most exciting ideas we've seen in a long time. We just loaned $25 to Emiliano Sanchez Hernandez, a farmer growing oranges, plantains, coffee and pineapples in Nicaragua. Would you like to loan alongside us to help this farmer get his pineapples to market?

Hernandez wants a $1,050 loan to purchase fertilizers and insecticides for his crops. We loaned the maximum amount that Kiva allows at one time - $25. This money goes through a local aid group that will help the farmer invest and pay back the funds.

We are very excited about the micro-loan investments that we can make, here in our wealthy country. These loans offer dignity and true business partnerships - not just charity or a handout. We like to support farmers however we can and we would like to help Hernandez get his full loan quickly.

Would you like to loan $25 too?

Thanks for spreading the word about kiva and for supporting farmers! I discovered this wonderful organization when the blog ad network I belong to started running public service ads for kiva.org on my site.

I was so happy to be able to loan $25 to a fellow sheep farmer on the other side of the world. And I was thrilled to learn that kiva has set a maximum loan amount of $25 per each individual loan because there are so many people who want to loan money through kiva!

i have been lending to kiva for the past two or three years and have loaned to three different borrowers. i've been paid back every time. it's a great idea and a great organization, and i really hope everyone will consider participating.

thanks so much for this! it's great when my favorite charities get some love. :)

Actually, I believe it's a $25 *minimum* loan amount. See their website: http://www.kiva.org/about/how/ But I agree, Kiva is great! We just made our first loan - the first of what I'm sure will be several.

can we check with the re-nest people, or the beneficiaries, about WHICH pesticides they are using--virgin forests adopting first world chemicals sound very scary to me. i will check it out at kiva.

Hi DandeE,
You're right. I believe the minimum loan amount is $25, but when I signed up a few weeks ago they also said they'd recently imposed a maximum loan amount of $25 per individual loan. So you could loan, say, $300 all at once, but it would have to be made up of 12 loans of $25 each to 12 different people. I'm not sure if this was going to be a permanent thing or just temporary. They also said many of the loan requests were being completely filled within the first 24 hours which was so wonderful to hear. It really is a neat program.
