What is Kewpie Mayonnaise?

2008_03_06-Kewpie.jpgKewpie mayonnaise was prominently mentioned in Wednesday's Times Dining section article on MSG and its ubiquitous presence in processed foods. We only knew Kewpies as those eerily big-eyed dolls - what was this mayonnaise?

According to Kewpie's official website, mayonnaise was first introduced to Japan in 1925. Since then, Kewpie mayo has been one of the predominant household condiments there. People often use it on vegetables and as a salad dressing.

When we wrote about Hellmann's vs. homemade mayonnaise several of you chimed in to say that you preferred Kewpie to either of the above. (Check out that post, too - see proof that Hellmann's has indeed changed their classic formula!)

Kewpie is a smoother, creamer mayonnaise, and it's made with rice vinegar rather than distilled vinegar. Its popularity in Japan really can't be overestimated. Wikipedia says that people who are known to really like mayonnaise are apt to be called mayora by their friends!

Do you use Kewpie mayo?

I use it, it's great for sauces and in sandwiches. But still buy Hellman's for potato and macaroni salads.

I haven't tried it but have been strangely fascinated by the bottle. I squeeze and poke it every time I go to the Chinese grocery near me. It has the weirdest malleable texture. Creeps me out.

honestly, i don't like mayo and this is the best! hellman's is too eggy, this is creamy.

have you been to holland anyone? remember the creamy mayo they use for their french fries? this is it. it's really smooth and silky and used the japanese way, on top of okonomiyaki with the fish flakes is so good. japanese potato salads are really good, too.

i am too lazy to shop at stores other than TJs so i don't buy it but i never use mayo either. all the other kinds aren't as good so even if i've got a jar in the frig, i don't use it.

i used to think that Pulp Fiction scene where they discuss mayo on fries was disgusting - until i tried it. and if you try it, use kewpie - there's nothing quite like it and any other mayo is gross with fries.

I've only used it on sushi before - looking forward to trying it as salad cream.

so that's what that is! there was a bottle of it in the fridge when i moved in; the outgoing roomie didn't take her stuff from the fridge or pantry. not a mayo fan so i won't be trying it.

My sister in law fell in love with this while living in Japan and we now find this in our fridge at any given time. It's really good - sort of a mix between mayonnaise & Miracle Whip - creamy and a bit tangy and sweet. Don't be afraid of trying it!

Kewpie mayo is the best. The texture is so smooth compared to a big glob of Best Food's/Hellman's.

I second Kewpie with broccoli...it's really delicious (and no more "gross" than eating it with melted cheese).

I love Kewpie mayo! My boyfriend is German and a mayo freak. He usually makes his own mayo, but now that I am pregnant, I can't have the homemade stuff, so I've been having this instead.

Hm. I've seen this in the Japanese markets and have steered well clear of it, but maybe I'll have to give it a shot. I've actually stopped buying Hellman's/Best Foods in favour of Trader Joe's, which is made with apple cider vinegar. The flavour is tangier and not as eggy. Highly recommended if you've got a TJ's nearby.

It's mixed with Siracha, a very hot chili sauce to make spicy mayonnaise for spicy maki rolls at many Japanese restaurants. Siracha usually comes in a transluscent squeeze bottle with a green twist top and can be found in most asian markets.

LOVE Siracha, I've mixed it with regular mayo and it's... not so good; Tastes "raw" and kinda nasty. :(

I just got a bottle of the Kewpie and tasted it - very tasty! The smell is eggy, but not overwhelmingly so, and there's a nice, creamy texture with a slight zing! in the flavour. Very good stuff. I don't know that it's going to displace Trader Joe's mayo as my fave, but it's a strong contender.

When mixed with Rooster sauce (Siracha) and sesame oil -the stuff is called Screaming Sauce and it is ADDICTIVE. Especially on shredded diakon.

QP mayo Siracha parmesan cheese on top of mussels in a half shell, then charbroil until mixture is bubbling and parmesan cheese is a little burnt. So good!

Or use qp mayo as a dip for calamari.
