Hot or Not? Baconnaise

2008_10_30-Baconnaise.jpgJustin and Dave of JD Foods think "everything should taste like bacon." They developed Bacon Salt last year, and now they've created Baconnaise - the spreadable bacon. It's 100% vegetarian and kosher, and is intended to add a bacon-y flavor to sandwiches, salads, dips, fries, and whatever else one finds appropriate to add bacon to. So, what's the consensus on Baconnaise?

Baconnaise comes in two versions; regular and lite, which has half the fat and 1/3 the calories of regular. It can be found in select retail locations and can also be purchased online at the website here.

is there allowed to be such a thing as kosher bacon? that seems in the vein of an oxymoron.

do tell how it tastes!

I like Dijonnaise, so... While I'm freaked out by what the "bacon" flavor is, I'm sure I'd eat it.

I'm going to make some bacon-wrapped bacon, and smear some baconnaise on it.

I was pretty excited to find the Bacon Salt here in my small town (I bought both the regular and peppered varieties), but after having it now I'm kind of...ehhh...about it. It's okay for sprinkling on an egg on toast or salad or something, but the general taste of it is more like Bacos, very artificial. For that reason, I'd pass on this too. Then again, I save my bacon fat in the fridge for other uses, so I may be prejudiced.

Eat real bacon!

I'm into bacon salt, but mayonnaise in general icks me out for some reason, and especially the fact that this is vegetarian/kosher and thus completely lacks any real bacon in it.... yeah, I guess I'd have to taste it to be sure, but I'm going with eh? not.

You know the thing that gets me about this? It's vegetarian... and as a vegetarian I'm completely turned off by fake meat flavors. I remember (quite fondly) the taste of real meat and I don't think the fake flavors hold a candle to the real deal.

Baconnaise Lite is rather oxymoronic, no?

i'm with jessekl on this one. why would a vegetarian want to eat something that tastes like bacon? maybe i'm prejudiced because i never liked bacon, but i don't like any fake meat flavors/items. ew, gross, etc.

I own Bacon Salt and have to agree with past comments about it's "eh ok" taste. It's nice to top popcorn or ontop of some hummus for a quick sandwich. But it hardly tastes like the food of the gods known as bacon. I suspect this Baconnaise tastes similar.

I'd be more apt to take some bacon grease and mix it in with some soyannaise and use that as a spread instead (I'm fond of vegetarian/vegan food items just like any other cuisine and will use soy products instead of their calorie heavy equivalents if there's not much of a taste trade-off).

"Eww" away, vegetarians, but bacon is beloved because of the same reasons butter endures: it's fatty delicious.

Hmmm...not - but a few weeks ago I was presently surprised by deviled eggs with bacon bits hidden underneath the filling - I really liked the flavors - but rarely almost never eat bacon or bacon bits - the crunch was shocking - then enjoying them it became annoying - this would have been the happy medium of flavors for that distinct recipe - flavor but no annoying crackling crunch - I mean I've never seen or heard of bacon & deviled eggs - with first bite I thought there was shells or something in there!?

mmm... bacon... I can't stand the texture of flesh, but I do miss the tasty tasty baconness of bacon, so perhaps this is a good product for me...

Anthony Bourdain says bacon is the gateway protein. Want bacon flavor? Eat bacon. This just sounds...yicky.

"why would a vegetarian want to eat something that tastes like bacon?"

well gee... umm.. because it is the single food that many vegetarians seem to crave. Though the idea of mixing it with mayonnaise is a little revolting, in the very least you could consider it an affirmation.

My husband thinks this is the only mayo we will ever need to buy from now on. I think he's mistaken. We'll be trying it, but it will probably taste like Bacos (like the bacons salts).
