Cook's Confession: What's Your Messiest Ingredient?

2008_10_16-MessyIngredients.jpgOkay, so it's impossible to cook without making some kind of a mess. (If you disagree, just humor us!) But there are always those certain annoying ingredients that make a mess no matter how carefully you pour, scoop, or sprinkle. Hear ours and tell us yours after the jump!

We're clean-as-you-go type cooks, but brown sugar always manages to defy our efforts at neatness. Even if a recipe only calls for a spoonful, we somehow end up with sticky granules scattered across our counter. Even worse is when we think we're golden, we've almost made it to the bowl, and then one clump of sugar tumbles off the top in slow motion.

We're starting to twitch just thinking about it.

What about you? What ingredient never fails to make a mess of your workspace?

Honey always manages to get on me and I consistantly spill flour everywhere.
But I embrace the mess as that is what comes with baking. The mess is worth a delicious result!

Flour and couscous; no matter how careful I am or even if I take measures to "contain" the spillage that I know is going to occur, flour still manages to get everywhere. And with the couscous, those little granules seem to go everywhere.

Oh, God, everything. I make glorious messes when I cook -- I mean, I clean as I go, but usually there's a lot of spattering and flailing.

Regardless of what we're making, if my daughter's helping, sprinkles. I personally struggle with honey and rice.

Honey. I just can't keep the container clean. I made honey mix (1:1 honey:water, great for mixed drinks) and it was a sticky process.

Mayonnaise, the containers, no matter how wide they've started to make them, are still not wide enough and I always end up with it everywhere.

Though, thanks to muscular dystrophy, I have shaky hands, so I have the ability to spill just about everything! I try and keep things as close to my mixer, food processor, mixing bowls as possible!

Flour. Every time I tell myself "this time will be different" but no matter what I do, it always ends the same. Some puff of flour in my face, on my clothes, on the counter, and/or on the floor.

Cake Flour. I always keep it in the box, but that makes it impossible to stick a measuring cup into it. Whether I try to pour it out or take the plastic bag out of the box, it always results in a mess!

Couscous is both hard to contain and a pain to clean up. But so tasty.

Once I spilled a box of couscous AND a container of quinoa on my pantry floor. That was un-fun.

I was just thinking about how I can never keep quinoa from jumping out of the measuring cup and all over the kitchen.

Flour by far! I always manage to spill some, or sneeze/cough and it gets everywhere... And then it's just a pain to get off your hands, gets all doughy.

No matter what I do, my jars of molasses and honey are ALWAYS sticky. And flour? Always a little dribble.

But the worst? Powdered (or confectioner) sugar. All I have to do is *open* my tupperware container and immediately a cloud erupts and descends to cover me, my counter top, the floor, and everything in between. It only gets worse when I try to scoop and measure it.

Any occasion which requires me to shred cheese from a block. Which is often, I make omelets more than any individual living solo probably should...

I've tried using wax paper, I've tried using my bench scraper...nothing.

But I make a MEAN omelet.

I am a mess with flour - i bake daily and i change clothes at least 2 x a day! I went to kiss hubby goodbye after lunch and he said to stay back as i was extra floury :) but I also hate pam as it seems to go everywhere. I tend to put the pan in the sink and then spray and that does help.

Brown sugar has always been a pain for me, too. I have minimized it somewhat recently by putting it in a rectangular glass container with a plastic lid, so I'm not trying to scoop it out of a plastic bag, but I do still always spill some.

I'd have to say water. When I do dishes it seems to get on me/my clothes (which embarassingly always includes the front zipper of my pants), the floor, the counters, everywhere. At least it evaporates quickly!

Oh and corn. The kernels have flown clear across the room when I cut them off the cob. Lately I've cut the cob in half first, and that's helped somewhat.
