Eating at the Office: What's in Your Snack Drawer?

2009_05_20-snack-drawer.jpgWe've asked you about your office kitchen setups, but now we want to break into your personal stash – your snack drawer.

We're opening up our drawer for all to see, so now we want to know: what's in yours?

Thinking about office snacks, I was reminded of an episode of Dollhouse, a science fiction TV series on Fox. Under circumstances far too complicated to explain here, a scientist admits to his usually uptight boss that he has a "drawer of inappropriate starches." They proceed to gorge themselves on Cheetos, Doritos and the like until they're nearly falling asleep on the floor.

That scene has stuck with me because that's exactly what would happen to me if I kept such things in my desk drawer. It would not be pretty.

So instead, I keep a lot of tea on hand (good for curbing snacking!) and a few little snacks that I'm not inclined to overeat.

Here's a rundown of what's in my snack drawer:

  • 4 boxes of tea: ginger, yerba mate, super antioxidant green tea and mango black tea, plus 1 box of random leftover bags.
  • 1 bag of Ginger Chews
  • 1 orange
  • 1 salt shaker
  • 1 Trader Joe's black pepper grinder
  • 1 tiny bottle of olive oil, a farmers' market giveaway
  • 1 half-eaten bag of wasabi peas
  • 1 half-empty bag of honey citrus cough drops
  • 1 set of silverware
  • 1 set of chopsticks
  • Napkins (extras from a recent takeout lunch)
  • 1 small bowl

So how about you? Do you lean toward healthy snacks? Inappropriate starches? (It's OK, you can tell us.) Are you someone who can keep a batch of cookies in your desk and eat just one a day? Tell us all about it in the comments.

I have various teas and packets of soy sauce, salt and pepper. Food rarely survives for long in my office which is one reason I tend not to keep it around - I eat it.

I want to be the kind of person who can keep goodies in their drawer, but I've realized, after mowing through bag after bag of yogurt pretzels, yogurt raisins, and chocolate chip trail mix that I just.can't.do.it.

No I keep a few mini-cans of low sodium V8 on hand and a box of Vanilla flavored Kashi GoLean oatmeal, which is filling and pretty nutritous.

I have a job where I am in different client offices every day, so I don't have a snack drawer at my desk. I do, however, keep a few snacks in my purse or computer bag. My latest craving is raw almonds from the Whole Foods bulk aisle. They are great for snacking because they keep you going in between meals.

At my previous job, I was known as the one to go to for a sugar fix. I always had chocolate or candy on hand! (I still do, but I'm new at my current job, so no one knows yet!)

In my snack drawer is: half a bag of Hershey's kisses, a bar of Lindt fleur de sel chocolate (awesome!), Nile spice soup mix, tea bags, sugar packets, stir sticks.

Mine looks a lot like yours! In my drawer, tea, sugar packets, smattering of silverware, jar of peanut butter, bowl, and a few instant coffee packets. In the (non-working) microwave, my mouse-proof storage: multigrain saltines, oatmeal, a cocoa packet and .... a bowl of Easy Mac (shame!).

I don't keep too much in there; right now I have 2 luna bars, two boxes of tea bags (green and white) in addition to some individually wrapped bags of tea, soy sauce packets, altoids, individual sized balsamic vinaigrette pakcets, a portable coffee filter with some ground coffee in a tupperware (the coffee at my office sucks) and various plastic utensils and a tupperware bowl.

Tea (for regular consumption, not snacking) and a couple of packages of instant oatmeal for dire emergencies.

If there was anything more edible in there, I'd have eaten it. I have zero willlpower when I'm hungry. As I type this, I can hear the candy bar machine whispering softly.

I have a box of cereal, a bag of raisins, a small tupperware of salt, some pistachios (which I haven't had the guts to eat since the recall but also haven't gotten around to seeing if they were on the recall list), a small bowl, some silverware and napkins. Milk is, of course, in the office fridge.

There are two sources of candy on the floor and one of sunflower seeds and boxed raisins. Naturally, I'm often grabbing candy. *sigh*

2 single-serving no-sugar-added applesauces; a small container of bulk almonds; a small container of salt; a Fibre One bar, an All-Bran bar, and a small bar of Lindt 70% dark chocolate; a 100-calorie bag of Baked Cheetos; and a bunch of Crystal Lite single-serve packets. Most of the food in there is stuff I haven't eaten at lunch, except for the almonds and the "emergency" chocolate.

I'm lucky enough to work in a place that allows me to keep a mini-fridge in my cube, so I usually have grapes, yogurt, soy milk and an emergency frozen meal in there. Plus diet soda and refillable water bottles.

Dry goods are limited to a box of cereal, an orange, fat-free popcorn and fat-free pudding. And occasionally a can of soup. It's helpful having the snacks around, that way I save in my wallet and around my waist -- I won't go raiding the vending machines or cafeteria when hunger strikes. :)

Right now there are soy nuts, 2 luna bars, wasabi peas, cup a soup (at least 3 years old), green tea and Finn-Crisp crackers. In the fridge is a jar of natural peanut butter. Other things making regular appearances are dried apricots, raisins, individual natural applesauces, almonds, laughing cow cheeses and string cheese. And, of course, the evil cupboards full of M&Ms, Kit Kats, Snickers, Dove chocolates, Bit-O-Honeys, etc., etc. provided by the company. It's really beyond me why they do that, but they do.

I must have a slightly anxious personality or something because if there's no food around, I am starved. If there are snacks to be had, I won't touch them.
I have a job where it is tough to keep food on hand. A granola bar/ bag of trail mix in the purse is about the best I can do.

We are a small office (just 11 of us) but have a full kitchen w/ a dishwasher so all of the dishes, utensils, etc. are in there. I've got a ziplock with various tea bags and a jar of cinnamon (to sprinkle in bad office coffee and canned tomato soup!) in my drawer. I bring my lunch almost every day so sometimes a leftover granola bar or a can of soup is floating around but not often. When I started at the office (my first desk job out of college), I would have snacks and things all the time. BUT a growing waistline made me put the stop to that. Now I take a few minutes in the morning to assemble a healthy lunch and snacks (could be any of these boring but good for you items: pre-cooked steel cut oats, cut up veggies, kashi cereal or granola bars, soup, salad, leftovers, yogurt, etc.). That way I can still snack but within the limitations of my lunch bag for the day.

Right now I've got a box of low fat honey graham crackers, a can of peaches (leftover from my breakfast trend of cottage cheese and canned peaches), jar of peanut butter, two boxes of tea I never drink and two cartons of soup from Trader Joes (butternut squash and garden vegetable) in the hopes that if I start bringing sandwiches to work, I'll eat them.

I've also got a carton of homemade yogurt in the fridge for that peanut butter, yogurt & graham cracker snack you posted (it's my breakfast) and a green bag for apples (I get them from the farmer's market, which is this afternoon!).

I've kept sugar at my desk and consumed it all withing 3 days. So, that doesn't really happen anymore.

Back when I didn't work from home, I would keep a box of Kashi cereal, some tea, clif bars and dark chocolate squares in my desk, but that job was so heinously oppressive that if a chance arose to go out and get a snack, i.e. get out of there, I'd often just do that instead.

Current inventory... a package of TJ's trek mix granola bars, two bags of Argo Maté Tea, a jar of Spice House Chai Mix, a box of mixed varieties of sugar cubes from Mauritius, a bag of cacao nibs ginger nibs from the Spice House, a bag of dried persimmons, a bag of freeze dried mangosteen, four different TJ's indian fare meals, and a bag of hoarded Cadbury Mini Eggs from Easter, plus napkins and tea filters. I also have a can of "Christmas in a Cup" black tea and a bottle of TJ's mesquite desert honey on my desk, as they don't fit in the drawer.

Chocolate Covered Almonds
TJ's Dark Chocolate Wedges

I find that dark chocolate has a caffeine and sugar kick that elevates my mood and helps get me through the afternoon. The protein in the almonds helps, too.

I keep greek yogurt in the office fridge.

No job here, so no snack drawer, but OMG those ginger chews are the best. Love the ones with peanut bits in them too.

When I did work at the bank, there was always something around. Very much a boredom snacking friendly environment. We always had coffee, hot chocolate, powdered apple cider mix (better than the coffee) and some sort of sugar fix. Also, for those late Friday nights when there were only two of us closing...a Domino's cheesy bread box does fit in a deal drawer!

I always have tea and chocolate in my desk. I consider those "office supplies" at this point. If I'm out of chocolate, I'll go to the store on my lunch break to prepare for that 3pm craving.

There's also usually a couple of granola bars (I cycle through a variety of brands and flavors...usually Kashi or Nature Valley) or peanut butter cracker sandwiches and some crystallized ginger (good for tummy aches).

Sometimes I end up with a stray bottle of soda or juice from a function.

gum

but this is for emergency, I always make sure I have a lunch with plenty of perishable snacks that I don't usually ea all oft, but its hard to determine what sort of day I'll have ; mostly cut up fresh fruit, dried nuts or a pudding cup if I'm getting hormonal =) and plenty of water.

I've tried 23 of the Japanese KitKats so far:
http://japanesesnackreviews.blogspot.com/search/label/Kit-Kat

They make for good "keep around" snacks because they're generally not as addictive or compelling as regular chocolate bars, but they are sweet and interesting so I partake when I'm seriously in the mood. Their strangeness promotes control.

And I've also got some tiny chocolates from a company called Tirol to sample as well as some sort of sembei or other salty snack.
