Old-Fashioned Breakfast: Biscuits with Milk and Sugar

2009-11-06-Biscuits.jpgHere's a really old-fashioned breakfast we have been savoring this week: slightly dry biscuits, warmed up, doused in milk with a sprinkle of sugar. It's warm, comforting, nursery-style food for cold mornings. Have you ever tried this?

2009-11-06-Biscuits2.jpgThis is a breakfast I ate in childhood; my mother often put this out the morning after she made biscuits. Slightly dry and stale biscuits, warmed up to piping hot, with cold milk poured over, and that glaze of sugar — it's so delicious! It may look strange — soggy biscuits, eh? — but it's a really delicious and comforting treat in the morning.

Here are a few biscuit recipes in case you want to try it yourself!

Two-Ingredient Biscuits
Angel Biscuits
Touch of Grace Biscuits

Do you ever eat this sort of old-fashioned breakfast?

I've never had biscuits and milk, but cornbread and milk is one of my absolute favorite breakfasts. Drizzled with a little honey or molasses...mmm. Unfortunately, I have to wait for occasions where there is leftover cornbread, and that hardly ever happens.

I've had this before--it is comforting!

Also, like marguerite, I've often had leftover cornbread and milk. My grandfather said that when he was growing up, cornbread and clabber milk, or buttermilk, was his favorite lunch to take to school--he'd simply crumble up a large chunk of cornbread directly into the glass milk bottle and drink his lunch straight from the bottle.

I've never heard of this before. When we had leftover biscuits my mom would cut them in half, butter them, and toast them in the oven. I like them more than the freshly-baked biscuits.

This does sound like a fun alternative. Guess I'll be making biscuits this weekend.

This sounds delightful!

I have not had this before, but have done something similar with leftover (plain) rice instead of the biscuits. Good comfort food.

sweet! I like cornbread toasted w/ butter and soft boiled eggs--and lots of salt and pepper.

I used to crush crackers (saltines), and pour milk over them to make myself cereal. My dad taught me this, and I preferred it to regular cereal as kid. I also enjoy cornbread and milk, but prefer mine with seasoning salt instead of honey or molasses.

Grew up with bedtime snacks of bread and milk topped with syrup. Haven't had it since forever, maybe tonight.

Never had this, but my Pop (my grandfather) would heat up butter & sorghum or molasses in the microwave for just a couple seconds, and then dip leftover biscuits in it. This was done after dinner for dessert.

Oh wow, is this like a southern version of milk toast? I often had milk toast as a kid but it's been years!

Cornbread in milk sounds awesome! I never had anything like this but we'd used to eat biscuits with butter and sugar.

Wow, I've never heard of anyone else doing this. My grandmother ate cornbread and milk in a bowl (the same bowl...I have it now) every night for dinner. She would wait until everyone else got done eating, then she would eat from what was left. There was always plenty, but she wanted to make sure everyone else had enough. We are Southern...Alabama.

You know, I still have never tried it.
