Breakfast Mocktail: Orange and Elderflower Spritzer

2009_06_04-Spritzer.jpgDo you drink cocktails with your morning meal or weekend brunch? Cocktails are a little much for us at 8am, but sometimes we do like a glass of something special with our coffee and yogurt. Enter the breakfast mocktail.

2009_06_04-Spritzer02.jpgWe don't drink a lot of straight juice; it's quite filling and we prefer to just sip coffee most mornings. But some summer breakfasts call for something more, something fun. So we make mocktails.

A breakfast mocktail is any sort of mixed-up juice, something frilled up for a fizzy wake-up in the sunshine. Here's a favorite: orange juice mixed with sparkling mineral water and elderflower syrup. (You know how we love elderflower syrup; we've been adding it to all our cocktails this spring!)

The water lightens up the thick orange juice so it's more refreshing and less filling, and the syrup adds a floral sweetness to the tangy orange juice. Squeeze in the juice of a lime wedge and garnish, and you're set for a fizzy, sweet, refreshing summer morning drink.

Here are the approximate proportions we use:

Orange and Elderflower Spritzer

2 parts orange juice, chilled
1 part fizzy mineral water, chilled
1/4 part elderflower syrup
1 lime wedge

Stir, sip, and enjoy with your breakfast.

Do you ever make morning mocktails? What are your favorite combinations?

8am on a weekday, no. But weekend brunch is made for drinking!
However, these do sound refreshing on a hot summer morning!

Oooh, that sounds tasty. But then, I drink things like this all the time--I'm usually not even awake for breakfast.

I like an orange/pineapple juice mix with some strawberry syrup or the liquid from a bottle of maraschino cherries topped with club soda. Grape juice with a little lemon and tonic is really nice too.

Orange juice and grenadine has been my favorite since I was a kid. I'll have to add some fizziness to it for a fun twist.
