The Complete 15-Minute Gourmet
Book Review 2009

2009_1_21-15-minute-gourmet.jpgLooking for a book to satisfy that New Year's resolution you made to cook more often but not sure where to start? Paulette Mitchell, a cookbook author with thirteen titles to her name, recently came out with The Complete 15-Minute Gourmet: Creative Cuisine Made Fast and Fresh. It's filled with recipes that can all be prepared in fifteen minutes or less. It appeals to me because it cuts to the core of what many people's excuses are for not cooking: I don't have time.

I don't know about you but fifteen minutes is about how long it takes me to shuffle through the take-out menus and place an order, let alone wait for the food to come. Of course, the trick is to make sure your fridge is stocked well enough to be armed with the food you need to actually cook the recipes on a moment's notice. Most recipes are on the healthy side, although it is by no means a bland, "health food cookbook." There are plenty of options for vegetarians.

The Complete 15-Minute Gourmet is a great starter-book for new cooks. If your idea of cooking simply is in the style of David Tanis or Alice Waters, this might not be the book for you. It's a straight shooter and uses ingredients you can find at any market. We're talking Ramen Noodle Soup with Spinach and Corn, Creamy Dill Crab Cakes, and Chipotle Burgers.

With fifteen minutes to spare, I'd give any of those recipes a whirl.

OMG. I have her 15 minute single gourmet book and it's one of my most used cookbooks. Simple, quick and tasty recipes. The flavors are consistently good and I've learned quite a bit about how to blend flavors just in following her recipes. I like that she includes tips and suggestions. Often one of her recipes is a jumping off point for me that I adapt and get creative with.

I am so buying this when the paperback is released.
