Emergency Reading: Apocalypse Chow

2007_06_29-Apocalypse-Chow.jpgHurricane season started June 1, as those of us in seaboard states are well aware. We have fond memories of carting the contents of our refrigerator all over town not once but three times during hurricane blackouts a couple summers ago.

There's a very good possibility that your power will go out this summer, from a hurricane, thunderstorm, earthquake, flooding or power shortages. And when it does, what will you eat? Enter Apocalypse Chow: How to Eat Well When the Power Goes Out, a guide to cooking and eating on a level above Spam and peanut butter when you are stuck with no stove.

The book gives preparation and shopping tips for those times when the electricity is nowhere to be seen, and quite a few recipes that can be prepared over a single butane burner. These include Robin Robertson's savory Almost-Instant Black Bean Chili, Pantry Pasta Salad, and Fire-Roasted Blueberry Cobbler. The Amazon reviews are very positive - this seems to be both helpful and witty.

If you want to be really prepared, also check out The Storm Gourmet: A Guide to Creating Extraordinary Meals Without Electricity, and Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook.

Are you making any power shortage contingency plans this summer?

OK, what do I get for blogging about this Friday? My power was out for three hours last night - first time in a year.
