It must've been the brand new Viking oven, because the tea cake I baked last night for today's shot came out mighty strange. Since this is a family site, I won't go too far into detail, but this cake came out looking a little too... feminine. It's meant for a ladies' luncheon, but come on! We'll have to re-do it again.
Yesterday we spent six hours hunting down props - from modern cake stands, to vintage tea cups and saucers. Despite the near-100° F temps, we had a great time. Iced decaf coffees will save me on this trip.
More to come...

Hah!
I had to do a double take on that...
Once you slice it, it won't make you think of "those things." I'm sure it will be fine delicious.
I've seen this in banana loaves and nut breads all the time.
I have to say, had you knot pointed it out, i would have never thought that, being that most of mine heavy breads look like that...
It's not a flop! It looks like a slice of homemade heaven! Dig in!
By the way - How did that Parisian chocolate cake you wanted to re-create ever turn out?
My grandmother's old Betty Crocker cookbook recommended pushing the quick bread batter to the edges of the pan, leaving a well in the center, just to avoid this result. Always worked for me. It usually ends up pretty flat as it melts back into the middle.
The red plaid Betty rules!
I am throwing a tea party for my sister's bridal shower, so I can't wait until you post the pics :) Hope it turned out well
Paul, your comment reminded me of an anecdote: Eve Ensler tells the story of a benefit she was at for FGM awareness. At the reception, a cake shaped like a vagina was being served, but no one could bear to slice the cake after all of the speakers, so they ate it with their hands.
reminds me of a philippine bread called monay (ancient tagalog slang for miss/female). the bread is shaped like the outer female genitalia and is one of the popular breads in traditional philippine bakeries.
