The Kitchn's Book Club Begins Today: My Life in France

2008-01-23-my-life-in-franc.jpg
The people spoke, and they decided on Julia Child and Alex Prud'Homme's My Life in France as the first Kitchn book club choice.

This week your assignment is to get a copy and begin reading the first chapters. The first five people who signed up in our previous post announcing the selection will get a free copy of the book sent to them by Anchor Books, the publisher.

Thanks to the generosity of Anchor, we have another five copies to give away, so the next five to sign up below in this post (in your best Julia voice) will also receive a free copy. Please, only U.S. mailing addresses (but don't post them here, we'll get in touch with you) and no repeat sign-ups from the first post.

We have 29 people signed up so far... let's get another 29 by the end of the week, for a rockin' good group.

Click through for information about where to buy the book and more about Anchor Books' support of reading groups.

My Life in France is available in hardcover and paperback at Amazon ($10.17). New and used copies are available at Powell's ($13.00 and up) and The Strand ($11.21 and up). We also found it to be available at many New York City Public Library branches, so if you'd rather borrow than buy, check with your local library.

Anchor Books, an imprint of Random House, is wild about reading groups and maintains a Reading Group Center where groups like ours can get information to help get the conversation stirring in their book group. My Life in France isn't yet included, but that won't stop us.

We'll write the guide!

I adore Julia. I used to sit rapt and watch her with fascination when I was a little girl (over 20 years ago) and now, when PBS occasionally airs her show, I still sit rapt and watch with fascination. I would absolutely love a copy of this book.

My boyfriend's mom just gave us a copy of this book for Christmas, so I'll definitely join in (She also gave us a DVD set of the original PBS show and the new edition of Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I guess she's figured out how much we like food...).

I got a dirt cheap copy of this book at one of my favorite used bookstores. Hope I have time to read it before the club starts.

I've already got the book so I'm all set. But I'd started reading Heat by Bill Buford and was just getting into it... I suppose I can put it down to start Julia's instead!

I adore Julia Child. They had recently installed her kitchen when I was visiting the Smithsonian a few years back. See it if you can.
