Book Club: My Life In France Reading Schedule

2008-01-28-my-life-in-franc.jpgBy now you should have gotten your copy of My Life in France for our book club. In case you haven't, we're giving you a nice long leash this week. All you have to read is the introduction and the first chapter - that's sixty pages, including some photos.

We're going to try tackling this book in five weeks. We can do it, right? Read on for the schedule.

By Monday, February 4 - Introduction and Chapter 1, La Belle France
By Monday, February 11 - Chapter 2, Le Cordon Bleu and Chapter 3, Three Hearty Eaters
By Tuesday, February 19 - Chapter 4, Bouillabaisse à la Marseillaise and Chapter 5, French Recipes for American Cooks
By Monday, February 25 - Chapter 6, Mastering the Art and Chapter 7, Son of Mastering
By Monday, March 3 - Chapter 8, The French Chef in France, Chapter 9, From Julia Child's Kitchen, and Epilogue

Check into the site each Monday (with the exception of the third week, when Monday is a holiday in the US) to talk about the book with other readers. Last check we had 54 people signed up. If you're new, sign up down here by saying "yes" in your best Julia-style cheer.

Hooray! Though I have to admit, my copy is a library book and I've already had it a couple weeks. I'm already through Chapter 3, and loving it! It's very easy to read!

With a hundred and one books on my "to read" list, I wasn't sure I'd be up to inserting one more... I've never done a book club before and I'm not sure about being able to keep up, but given my love for all things food and a recent fascination with Julia, I think I'm going to give this one a try. Luckily, my library has both the print and audio versions, so while I prefer reading, listening on my daily commute might come in handy when catching up after a busy weekend. Count me in!

Looking forward to it! It might even inspire me to increase my cooking. Especially following the motto, a little wine for the sauce, a little wine for the chef!

I made a google calendar (ical, too) for the schedule in case anyone wants to add it to their calendars. You can search for it in the public calendars--look up Apartment Therapy and it's the first one in the results. Or, here is the calendar id, if you'd like to cut and paste the address.

I'm thrilled that I got the book very cheap at a used bookstore--I wasn't even particularly looking for it that day and there it was. I'm glad the schedule is set up with so much breathing room before the first post. I have so many books going right now, including another bookclub book and a cozy Maeve Binchy page turner. And Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, which I just couldn't get together for the bookclub on re-nest, because I found the first 80 pages draggy. But I am going to finish that one too.

Thrilled to join AP Kitchen Bookclub. Living in London and France, I have a particular interest in this book. My time in France has introduced me to spectacular dishes and a whole new way of thinking about food. Markets and charcuteries are full of sumptuous colours and aromas and a wealth of specialist foodstuffs, and the restaurants and cafe's are to die for! Hopefully Julia Child will introduce you to all that - and encourage me to try even more marvellous creations.
