Coming Soon: Fizzy Carbonated Milk from Coca-Cola

2009_07_27-FizzyMilk.jpgHere's one more product from the department of things-that-don't-need-any-more-sugar-added-to-them-thank-you-very-much: Fizzy bottled milk with, of course, an extra scoop of sweetness. Coca-Cola is currently test marketing Vio, a flavored, carbonated milk beverage, in three US cities.

We are slightly intrigued, though, because — hey, fizzy milk! Also, fizzy milk beverages are very popular in Asia. So will this one make it in the States?

And the press releases are worth reading just for the entertaining aspects, too. The drink is being marketed as a carbonated "vibrancy" drink, and a Coke copywriter said it tastes "like a birthday party for a polar bear."

Right. We've been waiting for one of those.

The beverage is sweetened with cane sugar, contains a "hint" of skim milk, and comes in flavors like berry and peach mango.

That just sounds vile. I can't even imagine fizzy milk.

O! Will it be like a bottled egg cream, perhaps? That's the one American fizzy dairy beverage I can think of. (Well, my dad's eggnog, but I sort of gather that's unusual for eggnog).

I imagine egg creams.... nonetheless, it's just another nasty empty calorie beverage with tons of corn syrup.

I was thinking of egg cream as well or cream soda. I'm sure that's where they got their inspiration but I wonder if those flavors scored low in panel tastings. I could see that with cream soda which is nothing like it's original ancestor. If you told people that cream soda is actually supposed to have cream in it they would probably barf.

As I write this, I can't help but think of what Coca Cola has up their sleeve with this product. Forgive me if I seem cynical but, it's coca cola and if public schools may be forced to get rid of coke it would make sense for coke to replace it with something--no? How about fun milk?

I am curious, so I will probably try it. I think I would prefer a coffee or chocolate version rather than the fruity flavors. I like that they are using cane sugar rather than corn syrup.

It's not even fizzy milk. It's only got a hint of milk. Doesn't sound very nice to me.

I'd probably want to try it before it gets my vote. I like drinks like Calpis, etc. so this doesn't sound that strange to me.

It sounds disgusting but to each their own.

I agree with art above that this is Coca Cola's safety strategy for remaining in schools. Whether it sounds delicious or repulsive is a matter of taste, but it's really about feeding kids sugar and keeping their dollar in the soft drink machine slot.

Love this-- my husband said that sounds like making string cheese with pop rocks. Ha!

Not only just a "hint of milk"--a hint of SKIM milk. Sounds even less nice to me.

If I wanted to drink milk, I'd drink milk. Not a soda company's idea of milk.

This really does sound like junk food marketed as something healthy. Milk, cane sugar, berries. Right! I'd like to see the complete ingredient list. I wouldn't be surprised if it's as unnatural as throwing "a birthday party for a polar bear". I'd really love to see what a polar bear would do if you tried.

Ok, I got it--this is like bottled Italian cream soda, maybe? I guess that will depend on how much milk is in it. Anybody out there in the NY area tried it yet?

Doesn't anyone remember the "fizzys" of the 1980's? They were little flavor tablets that you could put in any beverage to make it bubbly and sweet. We used to put them in our milk all of the time as kids, and we even named our first dog Fizzy because of them. Looking back at it I want to vomit, but they were fun as a child. I totally see the appeal.

This page says they were from the 70's, but I wasn't around then so I was either drinking REALLY OLD tablets, or they lasted a few decades. http://www.inthe70s.com/food/fizzytablets1.shtml

The term "fizzy milk" makes me think of milk that just came out of someone's nose because they laughed while drinking or choked on it. Which is totally disgusting.

lol @ alaylam. I wish you were in the fizzy milk drink focus group at Coca-Cola HQ so you could tell them what fizzy milk means to you. Nose-milk. Classic!
