This recipe comes from a reader, Nina, who just got a new citrus juicer and has spent the summer so far downing this refreshing non-alcoholic cocktail (although we invite you to add a splash of rum or tequila!)
Fresh Lime Soda
Makes about six 1-cup servings
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (about 6 to 8 limes)
1 liter plain seltzer, sparkling water or club soda
1. Make simple syrup: combine sugar and water in saucepan. Heat just to boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved, then let cool.
2. Combine lime juice with simple syrup. (I use a large bike bottle, just the right size and very handy.) Store in fridge.
3. To make lime soda: fill drinking glass one-quarter full (or more, if you like it sweet) with lime syrup. Fill remainder with seltzer (and ice, if you like ice).
I bet this would also be tasty with fresh mint, but I haven't tried it yet. (Yes, Nina, it would! Crush the mint first in the glass, mojito-style)
(Thanks, Nina)
a korean friend keeps a pitcher of water in her fridge, filled with sliced limes & sprigs of mints. it is so wonderfully cool & refreshing on a hot summer day. this sounds like a wonderful step up from that.
The one that I use
"Pick me up "
Juice of a lemon
Salt to taste
1 Teaspoon Honey
Ice cubes + cold water ( 1 cup is fine)
Shake it up in a shaker as you would mix up a cocktail.
It is very refreshing when you come back after a work out. Good pick me up drink to beat the summer heat
1 cup ginger Ale
pinch of salt
ice cubes
Half a juice of lemon
a dash of pepper
Shake it well. Makes a cool drink.
I ran a google on " boisson chaude " - some sites came up in french, which I do not understand.
Can someone tell me what it is .
Thank You
Well "boisson chaude", I believe roughly translates to mean "hot drink" or "heated drink." Other than that, I have no idea what it could be. I've never heard of a particular drink being called that.
This drink sounds just perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. I am a big fan of margeritas so I am all for adding a splash of tequila. But even without the alcohol this drink is one I could sip on for a while.
Ok...maybe a bit of stupid question, but why does the lime soda look blue-purple?
This drink sure does look delicious. It is amazing the way one good juicer can change your life! No more sodas now that there are fresh juices on offer.
Thanks for posting that, Sara Kate. I didn't specify how much seltzer you'd need overall to go with that much lime juice, but I think it's more than one liter. Since I mix it a glass at a time, and keep the fridge stocked with seltzer, I don't actually know how many 1-liter bottles I go through per batch.

It sure is! I love that thing.
Does anyone have a good white-wine sangria recipe? Something not to sweet but fresh and using summer fruit!
I love lime/seltzer combos! So refreshing. Lately I have been drinking gin with vermouth, lime syrup, and lots of soda - sort of a sweet martini-lite.
maggie, funny i just made white wine sangria this weekend with some leftover white wine. i riffed on a recipe from the new basics cookbook. in a pitcher combine: 1 bottle of white wine, triple sec (i used 3 tablespoons), 1 grapefruit sliced, 1 meyer lemon sliced, 1 peach sliced (i might've added other fruit, but that was all i had in the house!) taste & add powdered sugar if necessary (i used 3 tablespoons -- the sugar makes it cloudy at first but that goes away after it sits). crush fruit against the side of the pitcher to release juices. let flavors meld in fridge for an hour. i think some people add water or sparkling water but serving it over ice dilutes it enough for me.
nina, i bet this lime soda would be wonderful mixed with white wine or gin (for a version of a gin & tonic)...now i'm mad i gave my juicer to goodwill! i guess i'll have to try making this by hand!
