Escape.
That word can mean a lot of different things. We're exploring all angles, inspiring you to cook foods from far-off countries and celebrating gear that streamlines your getaway. But we also like to escape right outside our front door, with a before-dinner drink and a patch of grass in Central Park.
And yes, we realize we're bending some open container laws...
...which is why we are as discreet as possible. We pour our (one) drink in the apartment, keep it in an opaque cup, and then just walk to the park (I, for one, am lucky – it's across the street).
Maybe you have a back yard, and you can sit for a few minutes while dinner is simmering. New York is filled with all kinds of green spaces, so you can find a spot to sit even if you don't live near one of the big parks. We have friends who gathered for cocktails near an old monument on Riverside Drive. In that case, a humble concrete bench was their escape.
Just slip out — no bags of supplies, no fancy equipment. Just a drink in hand and a few minutes of quiet.
Anyone else do this? What simple ways to you "escape" during the week?

I have a Sunday morning ritual where I go to my favorite coffee shop and get a cup of coffee and one of their scones (perhaps the best scones ever?). And I go outside to their delectable little patio and read a book for a few hours under a canopy of orange trees and with dogs and children running about playing. (Well, the children run and the dogs are on their leashes. But they all still manage to play together, nonetheless!)
It's an escape, though. And it reinvigorates me for the week ahead.

Oooohh, laetitiae has the right idea. With a 5 month old at home, I long for those relaxing Sunday mornings as I am a coffee, paper and scone gal myself.
Luckily, being in Northern California we have a backyard that we often escape to once baby is down for a nap...with wineglasses in hand of course.

I remember seeing an official sign in the UK once in a park that said (I'm paraphrasing), "you can drink alcohol in this park as long as a policeman doesn't tell you to stop" I thought that was very sensible. The implication being, if you act civilized, no one is going to object.

poor guys - you need to hide your glass of wine or booze if you go to the park?! i'd definitely hate that! luckily, there's no such legislation in germany - so once it's nice and warm outside the parks in berlin are full of people having a bottle of beer or a glass of wine before, with or after dinner... 95% of all people behave just nice and friendly, no problems with drunk people harassing others.

My favorite drink in the park experience is the 1/2 cup of room temp coffee I had left on the table earlier that day (in it's "to-go" cup & lid from the coffee shop). I just added ice, hazelnut liqueur, & a dash of milk. I then walked over to the park to watch a Dirty Dancing, the movie they were showing that night for Movies in the Park.

our neighbour regularly walks down the street to the park with a full wine glass in hand - i think it's fantastic! i'm not sure i could pull it off, but i think it's great

We'd get togo coffee's and bring nips of bailey's and jameson to spike them while we'd wait for red sox tickets in line. We figured we were just keeping with good old boston irish tradition :)
As far as drinking outside... nothing could be finer than having a swig of brandy from a flask on a ski lift. (ugh, did i just catch myself wishing for snow and winter?!)
