Beer Guide: Favorite Beers for Summer

2009-07-08-SummerBeer.jpgAn ice-cold beer is just about the most perfect accompaniment to a grilled hamburger and a side of coleslaw that we can think of! Here are a few of the beers we'll be bringing to our picnics and barbecues this summer. What about you?

Sam Adams Summer Ale: This wheat ale is brewed with lemon zest and grains of paradise (an African pepper). It's tart and citrusy with a malty sweetness on the finish. The Boston Beer Company only offers this ale during the summer months, so get it while it lasts!

Blue Moon Belgian White: Another wheat ale! This one is brewed with coriander and the peels from valencia and navel oranges, making it taste like a grown-up glass of orange juice. It's very smooth and effervescent. The fact that it's unfiltered also gives the beer an interesting, full-bodied mouthfeel.

Dale's Pale Ale: From the Oskar Blues brewing company in Colorado, this pale ale is very hoppy at fist sip but then mellows out into a smooth maltiness. It's crisp, bracing, and ideal for those sultry summer afternoons when even walking across the backyard feels like too much.

What beers are you drinking right now?

Frankly, I swap out the microbrews for lighter fare in the summer. The weight, not to mention the alcohol content, in the microbrews is just too much for hot summer days.

I like Session Lager from Full Sail (super cute stubby 11 oz bottles), Dos Equis Amber or a Stella Artois for hot summer days. All good, classic and clean flavors.

Magic Hat - Wacko! It's a light-tasting beer, but the color is pink (enhanced by beets). Really fun to drink, but you gotta pour it into a glass.
And, I like having [more than a couple] Micheladas on a hot weekend afternoon.

Ah, summer - my favorite beer season! My favorite summer beer is Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy. Beer lemonade - yum!! Also a big fan of Dark Horse Raspberry Ale.

Bell's Two Hearted Ale, all year.

Acme IPA is pretty good too, but recently and happily discovered Big Sky IPA as an acceptable substitute when we can't find Two Hearted. Hooray!

I love Alaskan Brewing Co.'s Summer Ale (with the orca) - FANTASTIC summer beer. That, and Milwaukee Brewing Co.'s Flaming Damsel. Oh, and Anderson Valley's IPA. And wait...!

I'm not normally a fan of Sam Adams beers but decided to try its Summer brew about a week ago and am glad I did-it is great! I'm also enjoying Blue Moon's Honeymoon and Fat Tire's Skinny Dip and Mothership Wit.

New Belgium Skinny Dip is really refreshing, without being too much like Froot Loops.

I prefer another of Oskar Blues' offerings for summer: Mama's Little Yella Pils. Crisp and almost sweet (I'm a malthead!) and much more rich in flavor than those other yellow beers.

I can't comment without also mentioning my favorite summer seasonal Woody Creek White from Flying Dog Brewery. It's the same style as Blue Moon but better!

I personally love a good berliner weisse or lambic for the summer.. 5% and under, and a nice bit of sourness to make them refreshing.

St. Ambroise Apricot Wheat Ale is my favourite, out of a brewery in Quebec. Mmmmm.

Stella is a great summer beer, but my hands-down all time favorite summer beer is Real Ale's Fireman's 4. It's brewed by Real Ale in Blanco, Texas and is tough to come by outside of the Lone Star State. The refreshing blonde ale has, according to Real Ale's website, notes of "Crystal hops...subtle fruitiness ... & malt" Firemans #4 is a great way to beat the heat. If you're lucky enough to be in the area, treat yourself to a sixer (or better yet, a pint on tap if you can find it). You won't be sorry!

I am loving Avery Brewing Co. Sixteen Anniversary Ale right now (local brew to Boulder, CO). It reminds me a lot of Hoegaarden White with less alcohol content.

Budweiser -- the real one, the original Czech one. Also known as Budvar. It is perfectly balanced, a wonderful thirst quencher.

Ugh. Dale's Pale Ale is one of the worst beers I've ever tasted in my life.

Best Summer beers imho:

Hitachino Nest White.
Weihenstephan
Blue Moon Honey Moon

to name a few.

Dogfish Head's Aprihop and and Festina Peche are excellent, thirst-quenching fruit beers. Their Lawnmower beer is also a great option for a hot day.

Shock Top is wonderful and citrusy, amazing with a slice of orange. I also really like Sam Adams Cherry Wheat too.

Local Wisconsin beer is amazing for summer:
New Glarus "Totally Naked"
Lakefront Brewery "Wheat Monkey"

I also like Bell's "Oberon" with orange slices and Furthermore "Proper".

Magic Hat's WACKO definitely! Smuttynose: Star Island Single is a summer special by them...a bit spicy but good. I do like the Sierra Nevada Summer Lager, and my husband prefers the Magic Hat Circus Boy for a Hefeweisen style. Aside from the SN, I try to keep local in the New England area. (Though that actually includes Budweiser, right near us in Merrimack, NH!)

I love Leinenkugel's Berry Weiss - perfect every time! That, and a Blue Moon with a slice of orange always hit the spot. I agree that the Bell's Oberon is quite tasty - it's a little nutty, too.

Simpliciter, are you from Delaware? Dogfish Head's brewery is about 40 minutes north of me.

I love a Corona with lime while sitting out in the sun.

Aside from Corona with the tacos, my favorite summer beer is 312... but I am a Chicago girl and probably a bit partial.

Scrimshaw beer is really good...it's a pilsner brewed in California, similar to Blue Moon.
