Grape: Cabernet Franc
Region: Szekszard, Hungary
Price: $7.99 to $9.99

The votes are in and Kitchen readers prefer Old World, Red Wines this time of year. With that in mind this week's choice is from Hungary, a land that has been making wine for over 2000 years.

Prior to Soviet domination and communist rule, Hungary was a very important wine-growing region. In fact, it produces more wine and has more planted acres that it's better-known neighbor, Austria.

Vino: Going to the Chapel, Part Two

2007_09_12_Wine for wedding.jpg3 Days Until The Big Day!

We are settled on the Mendocino Coast, whose stunning beauty erases wedding stress and puts our minds at ease.

As mentioned last Thursday we are embracing locality with this wedding. Fortunately the Anderson Valley is home to many wonderful wineries, so we had a bounty to choose from. Plus we have the fabulous Café Beaujolais, a pioneer of local and organic cooking, catering our meal. We are very lucky!

Vino: Going To the Chapel...

Mendocino is a majestic western town perched on the bluffs of the Pacific Ocean, just a few hours north of San Francisco and a few hours west of Sonoma County.

Vino Escapes: CIA Wine and Food Pairing Course, Napa, California

2007_08_22_CIA.jpgI've officially escaped! As you are reading this, I am in the Napa Valley attending a wine educator's conference.

One element of today's schedule was a food and wine pairing lecture at the Williams Center for flavor discovery at Greystone. In addition to trying a multiple of pairings ourselves (which was quite fun), we also discussed a system that can help anyone achieve a great pairing in six simple steps.

Read how below the jump:

Vino: House of Mondavi: The Rise and Fall of an American Wine Dynasty

2007_08_02_Mondavi.jpg

If you are in the mood for some wine industry gossip, then this book is for you. The House of Mondavi, by Julia Flynn Sigler, is an epic tale filled with genius, scandal and sibling rivalry.

Starting in 1906 when Italian immigrant Cesare Mondavi left Italy and culminating in the astonishing hostile takeover of the seemingly family held stock of the Robert Mondavi Corporation in 2005.

This book follows four generations of Mondavis and is a gripping drama about sibling rivelry and the Napa Valley wine industry.

Israeli wine is back! After several thousand years on hiatus, Israel, one of the birthplaces of wine, is taking the modern market by storm.

Israel has been making wine since pre-biblical times. Some think that this part of the Fertile Crescent is responsible for the discovery wine. Some even say that the discovery of wine and beer is why we evolved from nomads to agrarians; we needed to be in one place to let our grains and fruit ferment.

Vino: Good Wines for Grilling

2007_06_13_BBQWine.jpgIt's barbecue season! Oh, the magnificent barbecue a symbol of summer, frivolity, conversation and great food.

Not only does cooking on a grill create a bevy of delicious treats, there is also the time-honored tradition of standing around the grill and solving global problems. But that's not all, lest we forget the great tales that stem from a grill.
