Look! Sexy Rice Cooker Design

2009_02_11-Rice.jpg2009_02_11-Rice02.jpgWe frankly never thought we'd be calling a rice cooker sexy. But this design concept from Sang Jang Lee really deserves the description. In fact, it was designed to be sculptural and decorative as well as functional. Read on for more photos and to see how it would work!

The designer says that the top pedal on the rice cooker would be a touch panel that lets you control the machine, and it would tip forward at the end of cooking to release steam from the rice.

It's just a concept right now, although there is clearly a prototype that's been built. Would you buy a sleek rice cooker like this? We admit that it's more attractive than those squat rice pots we normally see. We don't eat so much rice so we just use a pot on the stove to cook it, but we understand that a rice cooker is absolutely standard in some households.

What do you think? Would you trade yours in for one of these? (via Yanko Design)

Is it wrong that to me it looks like a toilet when it's pictured open? Does this say something about me?

Hah Dana that's what I came to say. Looks like some fancy designer toilet I saw in Germany...but I would trade my Target special rice cooker in for that baby any day of the week!

It looks like a Diaper Genie to me.

I'd consider it if a) it had fuzzy logic and b) how many servings it made. Most Asian families (mine included) have two rice cookers -- one for everyday use (and that usually sits on the counter) and one for family parties (and is usually much larger and can cook 10 cups or more). Since I have a big "party"-style cooker, I'd consider this if it had a small footprint and would make any rice-based dish perfectly.

Ne choayo. Don't have the Korean characters on my keyboard, but I like it.

That thing looks great! Until it comes out, check out Zojirushi's cookers (http://www.zojirushi.com/ourproducts/ricecookers/ricecookers.html) They look good and work great.

Zojirushi is all well and good but when my husband started mumbling about rice cookers I went on a hunt for one I could stand looking at and came up empty handed. I think we're long over due for a better rice cooker.
