Gadget: Krups Egg Cooker

2007_05_01-Krups.jpgWe've looked at lots of kitchen egg-gadgets, from egg poachers (and poach pods) to egg slicers. But we hadn't seen an entire appliance devoted to cooking eggs until we ran across this Krups Egg Express Egg Cooker ($19.99, Amazon).

We're split on this one - yes, it's very one-use, and yet the Amazon reviews tend towards defensive love; one egg-loving cook says, I will defy ridicule and say that this is the most-used appliance next to the electric teakettle in our kitchen, and yes, I DO know how to boil water.

Perhaps if you eat a lot of eggs or if egg salad is a weekly staple in your house, this little appliance is a good buy. It boils up to seven eggs soft, medium, or hard - depending on the amount of water and the setting. It can also poach up to two eggs.

We're eyeing fresh new asparagus to roast with a poached egg and Parmesan...

i'm going to have to agree w/you on the most-used appliance thing. I feel like every home I go to in Germany has one of these guys - or even just the kind you put in the microwave.

My German husband (and his side of the family) are big on having a boiled egg w/breakfast, so we're planning on buying one of these - they use less energy than the stovetop!

Well, at the risk of being labeled a gadget-fiend (I'm a rice cooker proponent), this look interesting until I saw that it does not shut off automatically and the poaching feature got mixed reviews. I'll wait for a better version.

MFM - keep looking, Krups isn't the only brand - I know I've seen several models at the Kitchens Etc we used to have near us. They usually range from $10-$30. Now you've got me wondering....

My mother-in-law has always had one of these in her kitchen and I just love using it. It makes the perfect soft-boiled egg. I keep promising myself to get one.

I have one and it produces very tasty hard-boiled eggs... soft-boiled, too. It's like they've been salted, but I didn't add any salt. I can't explain it.

The only problem is that white will often pour out of the holes you have to make on top for ventilation. This can make a mess. Oh, and the poaching feature does indeed suck. Do NOT buy it for that. Still, for a couple of eggs every now and then, it is quicker and simpler than boiling water.

I won't deny that this is one useful appliance for my family, often in the morning it takes me a long time to cook eggs but this is not the only appliance I am interested in. In recent years I there have emerged few new appliance parts or kitchen gadgets and it's important for people to be aware of that because the bottom line is these appliances only exist to make our lives easier.
