Deal Alert: AeroGrow AeroGarden Half Off at Amazon

2008_08_13-Garden.jpgWe just got this deal alert from Amazon and thought it was worth passing on. The AeroGarden is half off today - down from a list price of $199 to a sale price of $99. More about this clever indoor gardening gadget below...

We've been curious fans of the AeroGrow system for a while now. It's a compact, easy-to-use indoor system that gives light, nutrients, and water to plants. It's perfect for cooking - apparently you can grow bumper crops of fresh herbs, salad greens, and even tomatoes in the dead of winter (in a lightless apartment, too).

This always seemed very promising, but the price was a little steep for us. This discount may make it a worthwhile buy for some of you, especially since summer is winding down already, and the prospect of no sunshine and dead gardens is not too far away. Keep things green with one of these little gadgets!

Have you ever used the AeroGarden? We've heard very good things about them, but we're curious about your experience.

AeroGrow AeroGarden, $99 just today at Amazon.

My BF bought me one a few months back and I love it. While certain things didn't grow very well (my mint & parsley), I've had fresh basil whenever I want it for months—purple & regular. The basil grew better than anything else, but the chives, thyme & dill all grew fairly well. My friend has one as well - his parsley & mint grew great, but his chives & thyme never grew at all. Their customer support is great though, and they sent me replacement bulbs when one of mine blew, and sent my friend a new seed pod when his thyme never sprouted. For $99 it's a great toy, and if you're curious now is as good of a time as any to try it.

I love my Aerogarden...basil is definitely the most prolific herb, but I had more mint than I could use, and a good amount of chives. Parsley and Cilantro was tricky, as it would grow tall, but never filled out with any density. It's easy to take care of. I have mine in a corner in the basement and it's happy as a clam down there, not in the way, not making a mess. I received mine as a gift, but have probably made this sale price back after 2 plantings, in money saved for fresh herbs, which I was buying pretty often.

I bought one last week, and my husband set it up over the weekend. Some of the herbs have already germinated! I look forward to having fresh herbs all year, the growing season is so short in Chicago. The one I bought last week is larger, the Pro 100. When I saw this unit in the Gold Box today, I ordered another one.

I have two. I found the herb kit that comes with the garden to be sort of unbalanced--the basil grows like mad and shades everything else if you don't keep it pruned hard. I just finished with some mixed greens (really great!) and the Salsa garden, cherry tomatoes and jalapeno pepper. The tomatoes grew well and were pretty tasty (I'd choose a different variety), but I never got the pepper (single plant) to pollinate.

It's really, really easy. Just add water regularly--every couple of days for me when everything was full sized--and add the fertilizer tablets every two weeks. I grow herbs in pots in my apartment windows--one of things I like about the gardens is that I can put them anywhere, including the dark corners of my apartment where I can't grow anything without plant lights.

I'm definitely doing the salad again. And I think I'll get the "delux" kit to make the system larger, taller hood and bigger lights, which comes with a set of blank seed cups. I'll be able to choose my own seeds, and grow full sized tomatoes or something.

Boo, it's up to $129.99.

I am dead broke, and would of bought it for $99.99, but not $129.99.
