The L-shaped design of the chimney results in virtually smoke-free cooking, and since it requires minimal amounts of wood, it's rather sustainable and eco-friendly. The materials needed to build this stove are cheap and easy to find. It makes a good outdoor stove for cooking and grilling, or simply for keeping warm. In times of a disaster, this stove would provide an efficient backup when gas or electric stoves don't work.

o.k. this is the coolest AT post ever!
I know, I've said that before...
My brother and I built something similar to this (more of a fireplace) with rocks we found in our apartment yard.
This rocket stove is very cool though because of it's efficient design. One comment on the homegrown site asked about it being used as a radiant heater for warming up an area outdoors. I could see this being used for something like that. Especially if there were a chamber between the internal chimney and the facebrick that was filled with sand. That sand and brick would absorb the heat and hold it for a long time.
If one were to go a step further (a big step further) they could use the insulation concept that I brought up and have some sort of piping running through it, back into a shed or the house with a pump that would circulate water/glycol under the floor for radiant heat. Or, if it had potable water running through it, it could be pumped into a tank as pre-heated water reducing the amount of time necessary to heat bathing water.

my fiancee has obsessed over these (among other eco efficiency type things), and made a number of them out of large tin cans. I rolled my eyes a lot during this process, but the brick one is very cool (and a bit more attractive than tin :)
