Good Question: How Are Ikea Appliances?

2007_09_10-ikea-stove.jpgDear Kitchen,

I noticed that Ikea now sells wall ovens and cooktops. Does anyone know anything about the quality of these appliances?

I really don't demand that my oven be professional quality, and I like the appearance of these appliances. I like being able actually see them before buying. The information in the catalog and online are a little spotty and the person at the store was no help at all.

Thanks for your help,

Norm

Norm,

You've already learned two big lessons in Ikea Kitchenland: do lots of research before you buy and don't expect Ikea employees to be able to offer much help.

Appliance411.com and Consumer Reports explain that Whirlpool makes most of the Ikea kitchen appliances.

We're hoping some readers here will own Ikea appliances and will be able to tell Norm more. Readers?

They're made by Frigidaire, I believe.

My mistake. Whirlpool. They used to even have the logo on them but no longer I guess.

I don't have any experience using the Ikea appliances. I've seen them and researched them. If budget is a concern and you like the look of them then buy them. I did some research on Ikea's island hood and it actually came with Whirlpool literature. So, if there are any problems these appliances probably come with a decent warranty. There really isn't much that can go wrong with a standard cooktop or wall oven if they are hooked up properly (nothing that can't be fixed).

Down the road you can always upgrade.

Ditto on the store help. I have to say though that the help I have received in the cabinetry department has always been great.

We have had the IKEA Luftig hood for around three months now, and we are very happy with it. The lights are bright and really illuminate the range top, and the fan is very strong. If I had any complaints, it would be that the fan is too strong (ie. loud). We chose the Luftig for the glass because it had a lighter feel to it than a large, all stainless hood.

My first ever comment (I just registered) and it's the 11th now, so hope you still get this. Last week I stayed with friends in London, and their recent renovation included a full Ikea kitchen, including range, dishwasher, fridge. I asked the same question about quality, and they were very happy with everything, plus it all looked terrific (but that's Ikea abroad if it makes any difference to you). Good luck.

Jut so you know: the European (and UK) appliances are different than the American offerings. I hear rumors about next year for European snappy appliances, but I've been hearing that for a couple of years now.

Ask me sometime late next month and I'll tell you about the American appliances. We are redoing the kitchen and it is ALL IKEA. That includes the fridge, dishwasher and stove. They are Whirlpool, which in this country tends to be the best bang for the buck. I tried some price comparisons online. IKEA has the best prices for Whirlpool. Furthermore, they look great! In fact, my husband (typically "Mr. Comparison") told me not to bother price checking because IKEA would have the best appliance (bang for buck) at the best prices (bang for buck) like they most everything else. He was right.

One thought - Maybe it doesn't bother anyone else, but the appliances all have "IKEA" logos on them in visible places.

When I was researching appliances I found that Whirlpool was my favorite manufacturer in terms of quality and environmental commitment; they also do most of their manufacturing in the USA, which was important to us. Hopefully that holds true for their IKEA line as well. (FYI, Whirlpool also owns Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Inglis, Estate, Roper, Magic Chef, and Gladiator, as well as making many Kenmore appliances.)

I just took a look at the catalog, they are as expensive as what you'd pay at Sears, AJMadison, Best Buy etc...

I wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole. When it comes to large appliances, dealer network, ease of warranty use, etc. are just as important as price.

I am not suggesting the products are bad but rather, they may be unproven.

Don't buy the Ikea appliances. The designs are cute and the quality is probably fine. But they say Ikea prominently on each one. I would buy them if they didn't have the Ikea Logo.

I am going to buy my cabinets from Ikea but I would rather go to Sears and buy appliances without the Ikea Logo all over them!

I haven't tried any of them so far, but I admit that I am curious about their efficiency. I guess now it's too soon to find it out, and anyways I have already made my plans to get a set of Maytag parts.
