Earlier today, Sarah showed us how watermelons get to be square. You may not find those in your local market, but you might find some of these: Golden Midget, Mickylee, and Cream of Saskatchewan. Yes, Saskatchewan. Saveur has 18 different varieties picture on their site right now—go take a look.
We love watermelon in the summer. It's a crowd-pleasing dessert that requires no effort (other than hauling it outside), and it rarely disappoints.
Unfortunately, we tend to find only two kinds at the grocery store: regular and seedless. Occasionally, we'll find a Sugar Baby, with its dark green rind and sweet flesh. We'd love to get our hands on a Pixie, which averages only six pounds, or an Extazy, which is tiny and completely seedless.
Go see them all:

I feel woefully uneducated about watermelon, but excited to try some of these. I never ever buy watermelon because of the size and the supermarket ones usually look sad. But these sound lovely and such cheery names-- Starbrite, Jubilee, Crimson Sweet!

When I was a kid, my dad and I would stop at a farm stand run out of a converted garage that I remember as being shady and cool even on hot summer days. They sold whatever was growing and a few kinds of fudge. Out front, I remember there being a few kinds of watermelon - this was in the early days of seedless being available - the big seeded ones, smaller yellow fleshed watermelons, dark green round ones, and a seedless variety. I always lobbied for the unusual kinds, but I think I remember the dark green round ones being the best.

I've got a sugar baby in my fridge that is just waiting to be eaten. I'd love to find some of those other petite varieties though. Time to go check out the Farmers Market this weekend.
