What President Obama Eats for His Afternoon Snack

2009_04_29-WhiteHouse.jpgHey, take a look at this! It's President Obama's afternoon snack. What do we spot? Butterfly crackers, cheese, carrots, and is that a slice of pear?

This photo is from a meeting with President Obama's press secretary Robert Gibbs. Apparently they had a snack together. What a simple snack! We must say that the presentation takes it a step up above preschool, although we did wonder if mats and naptime were next?

2009_04_29-WhiteHouse02.jpgMeanwhile, in the Roosevelt Room, the staff gathers for a decidedly much more office-like snack: pizza. This was a "pizza tasting gathering" — for what, we wonder? To choose the pizza of record for the White House? The one that will be ordered for all those late-night budget and planning sessions? We are now very, very curious on which pizza made the cut.

Oh, and if you're curious about that fine china pictured up top, here's a look at the White House's new china patterns.

I think the presentation is ridiculous. Flatware? And where's the mustard?

Yep, that pizza is from Pi here in St. Louis (that's right, the pres. chose deep dish style pizza from the 'Lou and not Chicago hehe). It's really really good, and it's a cool place as well. Apparently Mr. Obama tasted it while on a campaign stop and was smitten. Can't blame him!

LOVE the Flickr stream. Way cool.

Were Sasha and Malia in on the meeting? Looks like something meant for the girls.

I think that the White House staff set up the dining hall for the president and they follow long-held convention no matter what food is served and no matter who is president.

As far as the contents, I think that what Obama snacks on is a fair bit healthier than pizza. If a writer for a food blog said they had carrots, pear, cheese, and crackers, we'd be applauding their avoiding greasy, fatty fare. If the president does it, we mock him by talking about kindergarten and "nap time". :-p

Is that what kids eat or something? I don't get the "nap time" reference either. Looks like snacks I eat all the time! (except I'd eat the whole pear)

fruit, cheese and a couple of crackers...my favorite snack, too!
I LOVE that it's presented at a formally set table. Makes it seem important, which with the American "quantity is all that matters" mindset is something we could all use some lessons on.

Looks like a nice, healthy snack to me with no hidden references meant by the author of the post. My only change would be to have the entire pear. That wouldn't fill me up and given all on his plate (no pun intended), he needs the energy.

I don't know what's wrong with you heathens, but I totally need two different forks to eat my cheese and crackers.

Emily that is so funny! I love that they needed to put the salt and pepper shakers on the table too! Just what I need! My 4 year old eats more for a snack!

The reasons it looks, to me, like a kid snack:
it's all in small bits, like for small fingers,
the cheese appears to be the kind of little slices my momma made me, like a mild cheddar or something,
but I think it's the butterfly crackers that put it over the edge.

I like eating these items with multiple spoons, too... what?

I agree that the full-court place setting is a bit much for what's being served here. But the White House is equipped with a domestic staff--and they have to do something. Obama may have had to talk them down from carving the carrots and pear into little flowers and baking the crackers themselves.

I am told that those are Pepperidge Farm Butterfly Crackers... in case anybody would like to recreate this snack at home!

Preschool cracks aside, it does look exactly like the sort of snacks I love!

not being american, I've no real opinion either way, although, its a healthy snack and he should be applauded for it..

However, its very humanising to see all of this coming out, if anything, it makes him appear all that much more interesting when these simple details are allowed to become known..

I for one find the Obama's a far more interesting family to read about then ever I was in anything about the Bush family.

I love how they laid out newspapers on the table for the pizza tasting!

I too noticed the newspaper!!!!
What's up with that.
Now we know what to buy the Obama's if we visit the White House, a very large casual rectangle table cloth for pizza day!
