Is this not the coolest stand-alone pantry cabinet you've ever seen? I keep trying to think of another pantry cabinet that's as cool as this one. Thinking...thinking... nope. I've got nothin'.
Designed by Texas-based design firm Field Day and selling for a cool $1,900, the Alabaster Shingles Pantry is made of a solid maple frame covered in Western Red Cedar shingles. As Field Day writes, "The natural variance in the shingles gives the piece depth while maintaining a warmth that seems to shimmer."
Sadly, I won't be purchasing this piece anytime soon, but I can fervently admire it from afar.

These are great, but my question is why would you pay $1900 for something that looks fairly simple to make and put together yourself? Seems a bit high for a pantry cabinet, don't you think?
If you look at Field Day's site, the cabinet is six feet tall. Something of that size, quality (solid maple) and with individually cut cedar shingles is certainly worth that price. And it's definitely comparable to pieces I've seen lately. I just moved into a new house, so I've been looking at LOTS of furniture... this may have to be my next purchase...
For that size and the materials, I don't fault them for the pricetag although it's out of my budget as well.
I really like this though, and am thinking about modifying a used cabinet or an IKEA product to create a budget version. If someone can find a retail supplier for the shakes this could be a great DIY!
Certainly a fair price for that kind of craftsmanship but I, too, smell and Ikea hack in the offing.
That is a cool idea and I can see an imagine a great Ikea hack! I would want to paint the shingles
these remind me of Owl's home from Mr. Roger's Neighborhood
I've tried to find an online supplier of non-dollhouse sized shingles or panels, no luck so far.
Sorry, but I think it's a bit hideous. If I was going to spend $1,900 on a stand-alone cabinet, I'd get a solid wood one with fancy glass doors!
I came to this post intending to respond by saying, no this is not the coolest stand-alone pantry cabinet I've ever seen. However, after seeing the $1,900 price tag I find this rather insulting. I could made one that looks better than that with under $100 of materials in an afternoon. Great design? No. True craftsmanship? No. Ridiculous price. Of course. A fool and his money are soon parted indeed.
Ha, ha, perfect tongue depresser cabinet. Or do they still use those things? Cool enough but not coolest ever and definitely not worth that much in my world no matter what materials are used. If it was a DIY project it would up the cool factor though.
This is not to my taste, but it does have a certain charm.
And for all you would-be Ikea Hackers, the operative term seems to be "fancy butt shingles"

Fancy butt...cute!!!
how cute would an entire kitchen island be in this type of finish while the rest of the cabinets were simple modern white or plain wood?
