Reader Xiaolu wrote to us to share this treat — it has a funny name and an incredibly mouthwatering appearance. This is a Browned Butter Chocolate Chunk Pecan Deep Dish Cookie — otherwise known as a Pizzookie!
Xiaolu says, "I just wanted to share these delicious browned butter pizzookies (deep-dish baked cookies) I made recently. They are so good straight from the oven and topped with vanilla ice cream. I thought most people knew about them, but from the comments it seems like there are a lot of people who don't yet."
We had never heard of pizzookies — had you? We do love deep-dish cookies, though; this is a great way to make them. Just bake cookie dough in little individual-sized cobbler pans or gratins. So indulgent!

Oh man...and I just lost a couple pounds...
That looks Heavenly!!!
i remember pizzookies being a huge thing in college. those ones were more along the lines of a giant cookie, but these look delicious!
I LIVED on these in college. A pizza chain in Southern California caleld BJ's served them -- and they were to die for! I can't wait to make my own!
bah! I keep saying I'm going to lay off desserts for a while and then stuff like THIS happens... gah!
Yup, I love pizookies... My favorite is chocolate chip with sea salt. I posted the recipe in my blog last year (http://amelieschoice.blogspot.com/2009/05/pizookies.html), but I got it from the White on Rice Couple (http://whiteonricecouple.com/recipes/baked-goods-sweet/chocolate-chip-cookies-a-la-mode/). Delicious! I need to make those again.
I have never heard of them, but now that I have, I know my husband has met his dessert soul mate.
mmm, I love Pizzookies! I'm lazy though, I don't make my own cookie dough when I'm in the mood for one. I buy dough from the store, stick it in an 8 or 9 inch cake pan, cook until it's just set and slap some ice cream on top. Nothing fancy, just SO DELICIOUS! :)
In college my San Diegan roommate would go on and on about the pizzookies from BJs. WE made dozens of pizza-sized cookies in an effort to recreate them.
I third loving them from BJs. My understanding of the name originates from BJs itself, or at least the way they make them. They cook the cookie in a pizza tin (BJs serves, among other things, a large variety of pizzas), so the name is a combination of "pizza" and "cookie".
Rach1007, that was my understanding, too. I haven't been to a BJ's in ages so maybe I'll give this a try.
We have 2 BJ's Brewhouses here in TX, and I'm HOOKED!! The last time I went to a birthday dinner there, I ordered the large double-fudge pizookie To-Go, and brought it home to my hunny.
Pretty sure he fell in love with me a little more that night.
We have been making these heart-attack treats for a couple years now; love Pizookies and make them for "special" occasions. It is a favorite kid-friendly treat as well.
Oh man, pizookies bring back memories of my UCLA days. Wish we had a BJ's on the East coast!
Hehe, I "discovered" deep dish cookies on my own "failed" first ever cookie baking - I had some extra cookie dough but no spare baking sheet so I put the dough into muffin pan and turned out soft but still very good. The only soft cookie like baked goodies that I know are jaffa cookies and russian prjaniki and german lebkuchen, but I had never done any myself. The soft cookie-like things I know are all very tasty, so I can't wait to try this goodie out :)
Pizzookies were also made at an Arizona local pizza joint called oreganos... They are known for catchy billboards with pun-tastic phrases... Like "Legalize Marinara!" lol
@jendowning, Oregano's still makes them, but from what I understand, they had to change the name to "pizza cookie" because BJ's held rights to "pizookie" (they spell it with one "z.") In my humble opinion, though, no pizookie in the Valley, not even BJ's, is as good as Oregano's. They bake their dough in a baked-black deep dish pizza pan in their pizza ovens so the bottom of the cookie forms a crisp, beautiful crust. I don't think you can get that with any other kind of cooking vessel. It elevates the dessert from very good to one of the best desserts ever--I think that's why so many copycats have popped up. =)
a fellow phoenician here :) i agree that oregano's are the best pizookies ever!
