Most energy bars, whether store-bought or homemade, include nuts as a primary ingredient. That's why I was thrilled to discover The Good Bean's Fruit & No-Nut Bar, a wholesome snack for the nut allergic or those looking for something different. The Good Bean is a Brooklyn company that entered the snack scene with their Roasted Chickpea Snacks. Those are delicious, but as someone who regularly makes her own roasted chickpeas — and is allergic to tree nuts — I was even more intrigued by The Good Bean's Fruit & No-Nut Bar. Founder Sarah Wallace told me it took a lot of testing to come up with a tasty bar using chickpeas, but they finally succeeded and have three bars on the market: Apricot Coconut, Fruit & Seeds Trail Mix, and Chocolate Berry. The chickpeas give these bars fiber and protein, with less fat than many nut-based bars. They're also gluten-free, non-GMO, and fair trade.
Due to other food sensitivities I was only able to try the Fruit & Seeds Trail Mix bar, which is made with roasted chickpeas, pineapple juice-sweetened dried cranberries, and pumpkin seeds. It has a great texture and flavor, enhanced by the nuttiness of chickpeas without tasting like a mouthful of beans. It's the sort of bar I'd be happy to keep in my bag or desk drawer for times when I need a quick, well-rounded snack.
