I love a well-set table, but I sometimes struggle with interesting ideas for my centerpieces. Flowers are expected (and if they're too fragrant, they can throw off a meal), and I've sworn off candles since the napkin-lighting incident of 2013.

When I came across this tablescape by Fashionable Hostess, though, I was totally inspired. Writer Amanda Gluck used the bounty of fall to create a centerpiece that's stylish and super simple.

Suddenly, I heard my grandmother's voice in my ear, insisting that I use what I have. I love this back-to-the-roots concept! Just toss whatever squash, pumpkins, and other gourds you have with some assorted greenery and pinecones — and voila! You have an easy, fall-themed centerpiece.

Now, this arrangement would totally fit in at a more rustic fête, but coupled with delicately edged white dinnerware and braided place mats, it's a scene that's both relaxed and refined. I'll definitely be sourcing my centerpieces from Mother Nature this fall.
