Good news: You actually already have the best stovetop popcorn popper! It's called any pot — or a Dutch oven — that you have in your cabinets. You really don't need to buy any of those special gadgets. Sure, they look cute and campy, but there's just no reason to spend the money.

Obviously making popcorn on the stove is super easy if you have a pot with a glass lid, which allows you to constantly monitor the progress of your kernels, but what if you don't have glass lids? Some stovetop popcorn poppers are able to listen and estimate, based on the popping sounds (or lack thereof), when it's time to turn off the heat.
I don't have glass lids and prefer a seeing-is-believing method, which is why I got super excited when our Assistant Food Editor Kelli Foster shared this tip with me: "I just put my splatter screen on top of the pot instead of the lid."
The guard keeps the popcorn from flying out of the pot and still allows you to see into it. Gah! Ingenious!
