The latest issue of Saveur is devoted entirely to sandwiches, but they haven't forgotten about those who can't normally eat bread. A gluten-intolerant member of their staff tried 30 different gluten-free sandwich breads, tossing aside many sub-par slices before settling on the six best loaves on the shelves.
There are many more sandwich bread options for gluten-free shoppers today than there were a few years ago, but that doesn't mean all the choices are actually acceptable substitutes for regular bread. Multigrain-style gluten-free bread generally tastes more like "real" bread than a plain white loaf, but there were three stand-out choices in each category.
The best white sandwich breads were Aleia's Farmhouse White Bread, Whole Foods Light White Sandwich Bread, and Udi's White Sandwich Bread. The best multigrain sandwich breads were Glutino's Flax Seed Bread, Whole Foods Gluten-Free Prairie Bread, and the Multi-Grain, High-Fiber Loaf from Everybody Eats, a bakery in Brooklyn.
We definitely recommend reading the whole article for the full tasting notes, ingredient lists, and recommendations for a few gluten-free specialty breads (gluten-free hamburger buns!).

Red-and-Pink-Stripe...

Udi's. Tastes like sourdough.
I like Kinnickinnick.
Also, I have not tried a single thing from Glutino that wasn't disgusting.
I actually don't mind Glutino and find many of their products very good.
My favourite hamburger buns are made by a local company here in Toronto (Aiden's) and my favourite, favourite bread (the "multigrain") is made by a local company in Windsor, ON. called Healthy Creations.
I'd heard before that the WF gluten-free breads were making some Celiacs sick...not sure if it holds any weight.
Udi's bagels are the best but when it comes to gluten-free sliced bread, Canyon Bakehouse is the best! They even have an amazing gluten-free raisin bread which made me tear up a little the first time I toasted up a couple of slices. Plus their hamburger buns rock too!
