During WWII, the military funded research in dehydrating foods to make it easier for them to be packed into meal kits for soldiers. One of the results of that research? Cheese powder.
Once the war ended, the military was left with a surplus of dried foods, which it then sold to the Frito-Lay corporation. The rest is history.
