Other highlights: Being vegan is about more than just eating lots of fruits and vegetables. There are a lot of nutritional components involved (how do you get your protein?) and new ingredients that you may not have cooked with before (tempeh? eh?). I feel like Myra and Marea Goodman acknowledge all these different angles on the vegan diet while also keeping the focus on just cooking good food, period. The inter-chapter essays focusing on things like "Soy" and "Nuts" are particularly helpful for going in-depth on some of the non-veg ingredients — a fantastic resource for new vegans, in particular.

Despite the fact that all these recipes are vegan, the cookbook doesn't feel heavy-handed with the topic. This feels more like one of those cookbooks that "just happens" to be vegan. As the subtitle states, these are vegan recipes for everyone.

And boy oh boy, do they sound good! The recipes play with a lot of spices and pull inspiration from worldwide cuisines. This means we get a teriyaki stir-fry spin on "broccoli with wild rice" and spicy tamales stuffed with kale and butternut squash. A lot of attention has been paid to seasoning and saucing, ensuring that every recipe cooked from this book feels completely satisfying.
