Rental kitchens can be a tough room to deal with: major kitchen changes are expensive and you can't take them with you when you move. Storage is one particular issue we often see folks dealing with creatively in rental kitchens. Here are a few storage solutions for renters pulled from Small Cool Kitchen entries.

• Open Dish Storage: Storing dishes on open shelving looks really good and saves cabinet space for less pretty pantry items and kitchen tools. We love this wood shelf that fits snugly beneath the windowsill in Michelle's Cooking-for-Six New York Kitchen

• Shelving: A free-standing shelf in Finch's Sunny San Francisco Kitchen provides extra kitchen storage and in the future it can be moved to other rooms and other apartments. Painted in a deep gray, it complements the orange cabinets that were already in the kitchen when Finch moved in.

• Island: An added kitchen island in Sunny's Serene and Open Loft Kitchen in Los Angeles provides extra storage and work space and closes in the one-walled kitchen for improved workability. The wire basket hanging in the background is another great storage solution for produce without taking up any counter space.

• Hanging Storage: Three Grundtal shelves and a cheery yellow peg board provide hanging space for cookware in Nikki's San Francisco Kitchen with Character.
