Remember this amazingly creamy ice cream with just one ingredient? Well, in our eagerness to tell you all about it, we didn't give you very detailed instructions. Here, for those of you asked, are step-by-step instructions for making super-creamy, super-easy ice cream from just one thing.
That mystery ingredient, of course, is banana! The smidgen of fat in bananas makes a magic trick when they are frozen and blended up. They turn creamy instead of crumbly, with a smooth texture any home ice cream chef would love to have in their frozen treats.
How to make 1-ingredient ice cream...
Here's a step-by-step slideshow of how to do it. The major tips can be summed up as:
• Peel your bananas first.
• Cut them into small pieces.
• Freeze for just 1-2 hours on a plate.
• Blend, blend, blend - scraping down the bowl when they stick.
• Enjoy the magic moment when they turn into ice cream!

Martha Concrete Lam...

I add PB2 (i am sure regular peanut butter would work fine too) and cocoa powder and it is even more delicious!
No wonder this wasn't working for me. I would freeze overnight and then scream when my blender wouldn't budge.
Does it taste like bananas?
I made one-ingredient ice cream a bit ago, and added some wildflower honey to the mix. It's pretty delicious.
This looks amazing, I can't wait to try it! Thanks for the visuals, seeing something always encourages me to actually do it!
I once added a tablespoon of Chocolate-Hazelnut hot cocoa mix (had a tin of it in my pantry) in with the banana - oh, wow! It was beyond amazing!!
hello I'm Portuguese, I like the themes of your page.
I love this recipe with maple syrup glazed walnuts. After you make the ice cream, toast some walnuts in a pan over medium heat for about three minutes or until fragrant. Next, remove from heat and pour on a tablespoon or so of good maple syrup. Toss the nuts to coat and sprinkle with coarse salt. These pair perfectly with the cool creamy banana!
I JUST made this and was wigging out because I didn't cut my bananas small enough. Oh well, chunky ice cream it is. Turns out my impulse to check my favorite blogs every 5 minutes isn't wrong after all!
My food processor is kind of weak, so I had to add a teeny bit of milk to help it blend better... worked like a charm!
thank you - i was wondering how to do it!
This is helpful. I have some slightly overripe 'nanas in the kitchen right now. I'll try it this weekend.
I spy some Jeni's ice cream in your freezer ... mmm!
Can you do it with a blender- not a food processor?
Sounds delicious...how about serving it like this:

After the first post, I managed to make mine in a blender with bananas that were frozen whole for several days.
I just used a knife to peel the bananas and cut them up, and then I needed to add a bit of milk. But it turned out just fine, probably just a bit more hassle.
Went GREAT with a chocolate martini.
I'm thinking ice cream sandwiches made from this and two of the bacon & peanut butter cookies from Joy the Baker's site... we'll call it The Elvis.
Oh my gosh, Bruce, that is brilliant.
I also pulled it off in a blender with several-days-frozen bananas. They were already cut into chunks and I didn't need to add anything else...just took the lid off and pushed the chunks down with a spoon.
Tres Delicious! Just plain banana was delightful. Topping it w/ some warm sauted banana & sweetened mascarpone was heaven!!
This looks soooo yummy, and such a great idea if you have some ripe bananas. I was thinking a bit of nutella might be good mixed in with this. my boyfriend can't wait to try this either. :)
This is making me drool so bad.
Does this work with anything besides bananas?
you can use some avocado too!
All I have is a hand mixer, and my whole frozen bananas STILL turned into creamy and delicious ice cream.
I made this last night - fantastic!
Although I had to stop and push down the bananas more than I expected - I thought I'd missed a step or forgot to add something.
I did something similar to lellison24, except that I used Peanut Butter & Co's Dark Chocolate Dreams.
I'm wondering if Udo Ümami's avocado suggestion will yield something similar to Capogiro's avocado gelato?
@myfirstkitchen - I'm so glad you said that! I bought a large bag of overripe bananas at the grocery store for $0.99 (! It's like 5 lbs!) and was planning on making banana bread and ice cream, but all I have is a hand mixer, too! I was getting worried until I read your post.
Does banana ice cream store like regular ice cream? Or does it freeze into a solid block? Anyone tried it? I ask because I've got a lot of bananas to process!
I like to mix in a bit of cottage cheese. Makes it even more creamy and delicious.
Very tasty. I added about 1/2 tablespoon of honey and an 'Arctic Blaster' (that's a fudgesicle). Very tasty, 4 bananas fudgesicle made the right amount for 2 people. Mine was about the consistency of a milkshake.
P.S. what is with all the spam posts lately?
This looks great. Can't wait to try it. Wonder if a few drops of vanilla would work?

I use frozen mango chunks it turns out great!
OK. What went wrong? I froze my banana slices for an hour and a half. Put them in the blender. I got banana soup.
definitely freeze for longer than 1-2 hours. just made it with a banana frozen for 2 hours and if you blended it too long, it turned into banana soup. but with a banana frozen for a longer time it turned into ice cream just like the picture. amazing, healthy, and delicious!
If completely frozen solid, add a tbsp or two of water to get the blending to work. Otherwise it just clumps.
Make this recipe even more fantastic by blending it with medjool dates:

Can't wait to try this and see what it tastes like! I've been making banana bread and muffins but this is great for the summer.
I would also like to know if I can make a big batch and re-freeze since I'm the only one who eats it. Or will it be a solid block?
Maybe it works better in a food processor, but i had a really hard time getting a blender to properly mix the banana. (left with chunks for a while)
Result was not bad however, kind of thick and slimier(not a bad thing though) than ice cream, but still quite delicious. It's possible the bananas i used were not ripe enough yet.
Try mixing with chocolate powder and putting in a mold for fudgesicles!
This is the easiest and probably most healthy DIY ice-cream recipe I have ever came across! Can't wait to get home tonight to make some with the bunch of bananas sitting in my kitchen!
I second the question about re-freezing. Would I have to re-blend it again? Though I guess if I made them in popsicle molds it would work out?
I have been making this for years. If you're fortunate enough to have a Champion Juicer it's a snap. Just run frozen rock hard bananas through it for the creamiest ice cream ever!
This is the first time I've seen this. You pretty much just changed the way I look at dessert. Mid post I jumped up to make the peanut butter version, loaded it with homemade granola. My husband nearly teared up.
I have the Ninja blender and it skips a lot of steps. I am new to using it so to me it is like a monster of a machine. I did try the recipe and it tasted yummy. I did add more peanut butter for extra thickness.
I have been dying to make this but didn't have a food processor until I got one for Christmas (yay!). I just made it (chopped up bananas, several days frozen, left to sit out of the freezer for 15 minutes, and hit with a touch of salt and Mexican vanilla) and it is fab! I'm vegan and this stuff is my dream come true.
Heh Heh, 1+1=2. Banana and peanut butter would be 2 ingredient ice cream.IMHO I thought it tasted awful with just bananas and so added strawberries and some frozen orange juice concentrate, followed by some soy milk and yogurt. Mo betta for me.
This is a little over sold. It has a nice creamy texture, but it just tastes like frozen, blended banana. It's good, but not the amazing-oh-my-god, "ice cream" it has been billed as.
This was AMAZING!! So delicious, smooth, and totally yummy! Your instructions were spot on (down to the anticipated snags in the food processor...which were brief). We had some right out of the processor, and also put some in the freezer for a few hours...that was also wonderful! Am daydreaming about adding a chopped-up date and peanut butter, or toss sliced almonds and fresh bloobs on top next time. My new favorite (and pretty much guilt-free) dessert!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Does anyone know other variations? because im not very creative and i have been on the chocolate flavour for quite a while. Thanks
Just tried this! And it's amazing. Totally gets that ice cream fix in a very healthy way going. I tried it just with powdered cinnamon, but next time, with a hint of nutella.
I like to use chocolate flavored Muscle Milk protein shakes to blend in with my banana ice cream, or I use 2-3 cups soymilk, 1 scoop chocolate MM, and 1 banana for a great post workout shake. My girlfriend loves that I find ways to make healthy foods taste great.
