Shortly after coming across this photo on Flickr, this became our plan for tomorrow morning: get up, go to farmer’s market, buy berries and/or seasonal fruit, come home, make waffles. We’ll see you at the breakfast table.
We’ve really been craving waffles ever since Orangette blogged about her failure and subsequent success at Saturday morning waffle-making a few months back. She tested several recipes and came up with two favorites to try:
• You Deserve a Waffle from Orangette
We’d like to try the yeast-raised version, because they were a childhood favorite, but much will depend on Friday evening laziness.
Either way, we hope some late-season berries will be involved. Apples are also beginning to appear, so maybe we’ll dice some of those and cook them slowly with butter and cinnamon. Doesn’t that sound heavenly?
What’s your favorite waffle and topping combo?

Oh, I've been on a big waffle kick this summer! I realized during the July heat wave that waffles were perfect because the waffle iron doesn't heat up the kitchen at all, the way the griddle over two big burners for pancakes, or the oven for muffins/scones, do. (Thank goodness we didn't have to give up our fresh-baked carb-and-sugar weekend breakfasts! :)
I go with Mark Bittman's recipe for buttermilk waffles, and definitely recommend beating the egg whites separately. I like to put blueberries in the batter so they're cooked in the waffle (although it's a little messy when they stick to the iron), and top with sliced nectarines or bananas, plus maple syrup. Yum.
I've actually been craving waffles and really want to try Marion Cunningham's overnight waffles but only have a Belgian wafflemaker. I've been on the lookout for a regular wafflemaker at thrift stores but with no luck.
My husband believes that the waffle iron (second only to the coffee maker) is the perfect kitchen appliance. It tells you when it is hot enough to pour in the batter, and it tells you when the waffle is done. He thinks every man deserves waffles at least once a week, even if he has to cook them himself.
And when it comes to wedding gifts---we invariably give a waffle iron, and my personal family recipe for waffles. OH--heat the syrup!
I fell back in love with waffles when I found vegan blender waffles. Rolled oats and over-ripe bananas are the base, with cinnamon and other spices to taste, yum. Super easy and minimal mess. They are not as light and fluffy as waffles but when you want something substantial, healthy, and still feel like you are spoiling yourself it is the way to go.
This is my favorite waffle in my favorite waffle maker.
I haven't shared the recipe yet, but it's a fairly thick cornmeal batter leavened with baking powder, soda and whipped egg whites. It does better in a waffle maker that produces thicker waffles with shallower holes.
I second beating the egg whites separately and folding in the whites just before cooking!
Case of tornados, that is a beautiful waffle! Where did you ever find such a pretty waffle iron?
You forgot the whipped cream.
My favorite is the James Beard waffle recipe topped with Blis maple syrup. This post reminded me I haven't had this in some time... perhaps I will make it tomorrow morning!
@fi_burke - it's an old cast iron waffle maker that a friend found on ebay, and you can easily find good ones on there regularly. This one is fairly small, makes maybe 5" round waffles, but I've seen ones that do about 8", they just get harder to use as they get larger because they're so heavy.
