I had to giggle a little when I saw these at Crate & Barrel yesterday and Elizabeth's Prescription Bottles as Spice Storage post inspired me to toss you another Hot or Not this afternoon. Take the survey then see below for some more picnic action.
Perhaps it was because I tend to frown on funny little inventions that are meant to solve a "problem" that I don't really think is a problem (in this case keeping a wine bottle from tipping over in the sand or on a lawn), but my first inclination was "not." But then I found myself taking a photo with my phone, my mouth starting to water, and I thought perhaps it's a craving was kicking in (we gave up wine for Lent.) Perhaps I really want a reason to sip wine out doors. It starting looking pretty good.
At the end of the day, I'd rather make room for another bottle than take up space for another accessory int my picnic basket, but next time I'm at the park or on the beach and I see you with your Chardonnay in a Steady Stick, I promise I won't laugh.
• Think it's hot? You can buy the Steady Stick Wine Bottle Holder at Crate & Barrel ($11.95)

I'm going to say not hot. They're just something additional I wouldn't want to bring along, or remember to bring along, to, say, a picnic or outing at the beach. And I've always found some glass surface to place a wine glass on at a park, such as a picnic table, a book, a plate, etc.
They are much better in theory than practice, I've found.
I've seen people use these out outdoor concerts where you can sit and eat on the lawn, and I'm always jealous! They seem very practical to me.
I laughed when my mom said these were awesome (my parents go to outdoor concerts every week, all summer), but then she gave me a set and let me tell you, we were SO smug at Tanglewood last year! Our glasses were secure, no one lost their wine to a tragic knee-knocking incident, etc. It all sort of tucks together and fits easily in with the picnic stuff, it doesn't take up much space.
My in-laws love their wine, are retired, live close to the Anderson Valley in Northern California and host many friends/family to visits their and elsewhere throughout the state. We got this as a gift for them a couple of years ago and they do use it and love it. It's a little gimmicky but one of those things to get people who have everything and need nothing.
perfect for an outdoor movie, concert...you name it.
funny... actually registered for (and got) the wine bottle holder, though we have not tried it out yet... good to know that by a slim margin (so far) that we're not in the "not hot" crowd...
A few years ago Crate & Barrel had a small plastic tray with two cutout wine glass holders that was staked into the ground. The stake snapped off and attached to the back of the tray for storage. It takes up a little room to carry, but at least you get the additional "table" space for food. Ours comes in handy when we are at crowded park events where we don't have the space sit things safely.
I vote for "hot." As a veteran picnicker in non-traditional settings, I think this would come in VERY handy. Especially at the beach when you don't want the wine bottle to get heated up in the sand.
My very smart son bought me this for Christmas, it's really handy at a picnic, keeps the little kids from tipping over glasses and bottles.
Oops - on first comment above, I meant "flat" not "glass" surface.
I love these! We take them camping, to outdoor events, etc. and they are handy (before we had these we put paper cups of wine in a pair of taken-off shoes... we don't miss shoe-wine). They're not that heavy and when I bought them from C&B they were super on sale.
I should get these for my folks. They attend a few outdoor concerts every year and have EVERYTHING.
These are no good. They are too low to the ground, and bugs jump right in. Might be fine for the bottle, but keep your glass elsewhere.
This is the thing I was talking about in my above post. Seems you can still get them at other retailers.

Reminds me of last night's South Park. Keep shopping, everyone! Items like this will fit the bill.
I am so getting these for my parents. They do a lot of summer concerts. As for my friends and me, we go to the cemetary movies almost every weekend in the summer and this would solve a LOT of the wine issues. I like.
Hmmm I like this as an idea, but it seems too high profile to get away with ultimately: how can you *hide* the fact that you are drinking in public while utilizing such a clever device? I voted hot, bc its a great idea... sadly I'll have to keep lugging old juice jars filled with wine and paper cups to my picnic in the parks to keep the NYPD away.
I think this is hot! I drink Corona, in the 710ml bottles and this would keep my beer from tipping over in the grass while I sunbathe or garden (ps alcohol and sun exposure should NOT be combined in quantity :)
