Elizabeth Apron fro...

I tried the last Cure, but ran into some time management issues! (say, a bathroom renovation) So - for everyone who didn't finish last time... let's go for it! (can you tell I'm excited to begin??)
Frankly, the posts and photos from the last Cure just made me sad because I knew I didn't have time to participate. Some of the transformations were awesome.
I did the last cure, but was working on two different rooms so didn't get as far as I would have liked in the kitchen. I want to use this cure to finish up! We're getting married in 3 weeks, and I need to make room for the gifts (a lot of them were kitchen related!).
I've not done a Cure yet, so this Kitchen Cure will be a great way to ease into it. Or am I not aware of what I'm getting into?!!
I'm in a rental so I can't go all crazy and paint up to the cathedral ceilings, but perhaps that won't be necessary!
Looking forward to it all!
Signed up last fall but was not able to fit it into "life" ... looking forward to getting it done this time.
I have my photos from the first assignment ... and things pretty much look the same ... time for a change!
I'm a Kitchen-Cure newbie although I've done versions of my own kitchen cures from time to time I'm really looking forward to new tips and tricks that will be offered during the 4 weeks. Perfect timing with the seasons about to change.
I'm also a newbie, and I'm hoping this will help! I love my little kitchen, but it's got some serious needs.
I have an apartment kitchen that I will be leaving during this Kitchen-cure and moving into my first house- I hope that the cure will help me start off on the "right foot" Thanks! And good luck to everyone participating!
Perfect timing. I'm new to the cure and doing a kitchen remodel. Can't wait to share and bring the kitchen to life again.

With a few major life changes in our household (I started grad school last month and the bf started a new job yesterday after closing the wine shop he owned for 5 years - bittersweet) we've been pretty lax in keeping up with cooking at home, and our poor kitchen shows it. Can't wait! This is perfect timing, and a good way to distract myself from the end of winter doldrums!
I've been done a Cure before and I'm really looking forward to it. I've just signed up so I'm hoping in a month's time I'll have a kitchen I can be proud of.
Good luck everyone!
very excited about my first cure. i so need this right now. i don't even like to walk into my kitchen - let alone cook anything - because of the disastrous state of things in there.
I signed up last time, too! And didn't make it. :( I broke my humerus (it wasn't funny either!). My kitchen REALLY needs a cure after the 5 month long healing process. I'm excited to start. I need some color in there, too. The whole thing is white.
I tried the spring cure but didn't make it---too pregnant to finish. Looking forward to finishing this kitchen cure. Best of luck, everybody.
I'm also a cure newbie. I'm so excited and looking forward to it! Can't wait for the first e-mail! ;-)
This cure comes at a perfect time--I am in the process of decluttering our place, AND we have a dinner party planned for March 27...we're just coming off a month of doing the thing-a-day project over on posterous, and we've been working and living amidst piles of craft projects--it's time to shed!
A couple years ago I moved into what was my parents' house. Not much (okay, nothing) was removed from the kitchen, and I brought along some things of my own. Little by little I've been making room for things, but not enough--the counters are way too crowded. And the freezer desperately needs to be decluttered, and cleaned after a disastrous ice-cream-cake-in-the-making leak.
I'm new to this. I'd never heard of the kitchen cure until about a week ago. I'm really excited to get my kitchen in order. Interestingly enough, my husband tackled one of my messier cabinets the other day so that is one less thing I have to do when it comes to it. But I still have so much else to get done. I know I'm going to need a lot of encouragement. I have a brand new baby so I'm still not quite up to full work capacity yet, but I'm planning on doing my best!
Oh! It's SO exciting to know I'm not the only one!! We rent our house and the kitchen is awful!! Old appliances, old linoleum, no counter space... I'm inspired to GO FOR IT!! Can't wait to see everyone's pictures!!
I've been reading Apartment Therapy for about 8 months now and I'm so excited to take advantage of the "cure"!! I moved into my first apartment this last June and am still trying to make it feel like a home. Cant wait to see the results from myself and everyone in the group!!
I already commented on today's first post, but thought I'd add my two cents here as well. I'm happy to be here and hope the Kitchen Cure will prove as effective for me as the Fall Cure 2009 was.
I keep a blog in Finnish called "The busy domestic goddess" (actually I'm an aspiring such...), but there are lots of pictures in this article http://kotijumalatar.wordpress.com/2010/02/26/organisointi-5-keittio/ with direct links to a couple of sources in English, so if someone's too busy to seek out practical ideas themselves, please don't hesitate to stop by. Some work has already been done with the Kitchen Cure in mind!
I just signed up! I'm excited and nervous, I have so much work to do!
Hello! Just moved - sorting through the chaos of kitchen management with a family of 5. Looking forward to the tasks. Looming and frozen in time already - the frozen meals group lasagnas I made a few weeks ago left a trail of goo in my freezer when they squished while freezing. Blech. Best get on that!
Unfortunately, I have no "before" pictures of my fridge and food cupboards. I went on a cleaning binge last weekend and threw away everything in the fridge and cupboards that was opened and unhealthy, and dumped all the unopened (non-perishable of course) in a box for donation. I have very little left in my cupboards. One more pass-through and they'll be done - and that's mostly spices. Now my freezers... ugh. I'm almost afraid to open them!
this is my first cure, and i'm mortified with the state of my cabinets, but i'm very excited to cure my sickly kitchen. i'm wondering if the embarrassment of posting pictures of them is what makes this cure work!!
I've been debunking expired stuff for the past couple of weeks, but a close look at the grossness left behind makes me sad...
Well... My pantry and fridge were quite clean, or so I thought... Since everything was pretty much well ordered in my kitchen cupboards and such, I thought the 1st assignment was going to be easy-peasy. Euh... It took me 2 1/2 hours yesterday just to do the pantry ! So much expired stuff, so much rancid stuff and, I think, maybe living things in a cardboard box that contained opened bags of flour and such. Eurk ! Thank God for the cure. Fridge and spices tomorrow.
I'm really happy with what I accomplished today. I emptied all of the pantry cupboards, cleaned them all down, threw out a whole lot of stuff, and cleared enough storage to move most of the appliances that were cluttering the counter tops. Plus, the hidden cupboard, which I posted photos of in the Flickr pool. It looks so much better already.
Today was before pictures and refrigerator day. Wow... I got lucky today and mostly I took pictures and cleaned out old jars. My husband did the bulk of the cleaning and tossing old food. He is much better at it than I am. I cannot believe how pretty the fridge looks. Now time for more pictures and making meatloaf. I am so glad I signed up to do the Cure... I needed the motivation. I'm loving the flickr pool.
This cure is just what I need to organize my kitchen. I feel like everything in my kitchen is a puzzle and I'm trying to make the pieces fit together. There is stuff that should probably go away and clutter on the floor from stuff that has no home! I am documenting my kitchen cure at my blog Beach Digs.
So far the Cure is giving me a serious case of fridge envy! My loft came equipped with a tiny (10 cubic ft.) fridge/freezer that makes storing large quantities of anything impossible, and the footprint there is too small for me to replace it with a full-size model. I deal with it by buying only what I can cook immediately, but sometimes it gets annoying to have to run to the store several times a week.
I'm preparing for a move, so we'd already begun purging. I've tried to only buy enough for for a few days to avoid waste. And when I cook in bulk I immediately freeze portions so we can use them for lunches and not eat the same thing every day for a week. But I've also tried to be sure not to leave anything in the freezer for more than 4-6 weeks to save the flavor (for prepared meals, not frozen veggie bags or, erm, the vodka we keep there--shh!).
I'm so excited about this Cure! Got some catching up to do this weekend. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make sure the roommate doesn't cause the kitchen to go back to its previous state after completing the Cure?
I love having an excuse to organize! The kitchen already looks so much better! I need some help with ideas for a special project in our apartment kitchen, though. We can't do too much since we'll be leaving it in six months or so. Ideas?
LivLovLaf, how about labeling all your newly created, organized zones? I just reorganized the freezer into meat, fruit & veg, baking, etc. and then realized that there was no way it was going to stay divided unless I labeled the areas. I haven't done it yet because it seems a bit obsessive to open the freezer and see labeled sections, but if you have housemates I think it wouldn't have that effect.
I'm participating in this cure...but the sad truth is that my kitchen is fairly organized on a day to day basis. The cure has inspired me to clean up a bit more thoroughly (I had a party in late February after working through my first "cure" following the book)
I'm cleaning out my fridge, but I still have some duplicates (blame the party). I used cheese cubes leftover from an appetizer tray to make a lovely Mac & Cheese from scratch.
Today I'll be making sure my one narrow pots and pans cabinet is organized. Everything has to stack together just right... There are some things I refuse to purge.
I'm a week behind, but just finished cleaning out the pantry and the spice cabinets. Already feeling happier about the state of things in the kitchen! I'm really looking forward to the deep clean next week, but I suppose I should finish up weeks 1 and 2 first!
Photos will be on Flickr tonight.
Regarding the special project: How ambitious are your plans? Mine is to hang up some curtains and hopefully change the lamp above the dinner table as well.
I'm thinking about repainting my black cabinets. Black seemed like a great idea when I painted in September. I still like it but it feels a bit too dark now. Not gloomy, just dark. I might go back to white. I also plan on finally choosing a new floor and putting up new curtains or blinds.
First I have to finish what I didn't get done weeks 1 and 2!
I'm sick, so I fell behind on week two. But starting to feel better so I think this weekend I'll catch up. I think that our special project will "officially" be painting the trim that was never finished when we painted the wall. We are also working on replacing the dishwasher and stove (going to gas!) but I'm thinking that might happen right as The Cure finishes... I hope! So trim it is!
I am a little behind...just finished week one's assignments and am so motivated to keep going. Was really grossed out by the posts regarding bugs in spices, but was pleasantly surprised to find only a few dead ones in the spice drawer. I plan to start on week two this weekend. I just decided on my special project and I am so excited! There is very old and outdated wallpaper in the kitchen and we have been discussing options to update. I just decided - I am going to texture the walls over the wallpaper with a cheesecloth method I have seen and then paint over that! Can't wait to see the outcome!
hmmm... special project. wish i had the money and ability to change my warped counter tops... but i'm renting.
I'm gonna go for curtains instead. I've been lusting after that green bird print at Urban Outfitters. .. i'm gonna go for it.
Hi Sara Kate, I have just sent in a photo to a "Cry for Help" -- a little late! Anyone have any advice on how to improve a stained porcelain kitchen sink? Thanks!
Weeks 1 & 2 were pretty much a breeze as with so little food in the place the fridge and panty were easy to finish off and my kitchen tools were already organized.
The deep clean was more of a struggle, I HATE cleaning. But it's done, al of the stuff that shouldn't be in the kitchen still is as I've no where else to put it and some (most) of it needs to stay. Ugh !
I'm going to be greedy and have 2 special projects.
1. Find a space outside of the kitchen for all of the non kitchen stuff
2. Get new wall plates. A couple of years ago I replaced my countertops with silestone and ran it all the way to the wall cabinets. The wall paltes now no longer have anywhere to screw in and so are just resting. Am going to look for some that don't need to be screwed in and that are in stainless steel to go with the appliances.
Am I the only one still to be doing stuff? I'm speed curing and have some cupboards to organize so won't graduate today, maybe during the weekend though. The special projects I've mentioned above will have to wait.
