What immediately strikes you about this kitchen? Is it how small it is? Or how cool it looks outlined in a blue paint? If, as the saying goes, you gotta work with what God gave you, then you might as well do something fabulous with it.
This otherwise cramped, semi-enclosed kitchen space gets a life of its own with the help of a careful and precise paint job. It now looks like a little cozy oasis, set apart from the rest of the home.
Have you ever done something like this with your small kitchen?

Love this look!
Ditto!
This looks so sharp - should have done this in my last apartment!
Really brilliant--and a beautiful shade of blue to boot!
Super idea.
Actually, the first thing that struck me was that I couldn't find a full-sized refrigerator...
The fridge is right beside the stove, with pictures on the side of it and a block of wood on top of it, with stuff on top of the wood lol.
This kitchen is gorgeous! I've been learning to live with a smaller kitchen and this looks so well designed. I think it's that, not the space, that matters most!
Cool I was hoping for more examples, I guess there will be an article later today on that.
um @thera, the fridge is not next to the stove.... that "block of wood" is a shelf above what appears to be a microwave. I'd guess that the fridge is under the countertops or elsewhere in the dining space. Shame AT didn't reference this better.
This looks lovely though! If it were my kitchen, I would probably have more overhang of the countertop and create a little breakfast bar with some stools!
super smart.
I expect that the counter-height fridge is tucked under the counter on the left (near the stove), or perhaps it's to the left of the sink (if that's not a dishwasher). I've lived for years with a half-size fridge, which is great if you're on your own and don't entertain much. You also don't need a dishwasher, which gives you extra room for either a half-size fridge or a separate freezer. I don't think I'd ever go back to a full-size fridge. With less space, you tend to use leftovers quickly. It's amazing how you can learn to adapt to less!
This isn't a small kitchen. It's a wet bar. Oh wait, is that a teeny tiny stove I see in the back corner? Okay maybe it is a kitchen. Why would you opt for open shelves instead of traditional uppers in such a small space on the back wall? You're losing a ton of potential storage.
Practicalities aside, this is adorable. Love the color combos and butcher block counters. Very nice!
Ahhh, so of course you post this great idea after I move out of the apartment with the box kitchen which I put up with for 8 years! If only I had such vision, sigh.
This is a darling look.
However, I cant really tell if defining it with paint makes it appear smaller or larger since I haven't seen the "before picture". Sometimes to outline/define a space can make it look smaller.
I do however think its cute that there are loads of cookbooks to go with such a small space!
for the record, i believe the fridge IS in the left corner...the silver square (which if you look close enough, is farther back, essentially to the RIGHT of the stove).
the black box is presumably the microwave and is hanging ABOVE the stove.
either way, i like the look of open shelving in a small space, but not with this much stuff. pare down the amount of kitchen items/accessories, or add closed upper cabinets for a cleaner look.
it's not cabinets vs. shelves. it's spacing the shelves so you have as many as you would in the cabinets. stores just as much, just isn't hidden.
I am going to ignore that poster on the wall. The blue paint looks great.
genius and looks just beautiful!
I've been looking for a way to make my very small but open kitchen look great and flow with the rest of the apartment.. I think this may be it! Thanks for the inspiration!
unique and inspirational.
