We've talked about trashcans several times here and we think we hit the jackpot when we purchased our current trashcan. We'll never go back to our old ways, and we think we need to share the wealth.
We currently own the SimpleHuman Deluxe Rectangular Step Trash Can and we absolutely love it. Before this, we had never owned a step can before and we realized how great they can be. If you're walking to the trashcan with meat wrappers or a hand full of trash it's so much easier to just step on the pedal and it opens.
We came across the SimpleHuman Deluxe Rectangular Recycle Trash Can and we sort of wish we would have seen this before! We keep our recycling bin on the back patio and each time we have a recyclable item to dispose of we have to go outside. The bins are too large to keep inside. With this trashcan, the recycling and trash are in the same container.
The lid stays open as long as you need &mdash great if you don't have a garbage disposal and need to peel vegetables into the trash! There's also a special opening on the back of the inner can to help keep the trash bag in place.
&bull Find it at Macy's for $189.99.

Straw Mat from The ...

I have the plain (non-recycling bin) rectangular can and will also sing it's praises. We had a regular old lidded can, but after adopting a dog with naughty trash-picking habits, this can saved the day. So nice not to have to worry about/struggle with the garbage can! Spendy, but worth it!
I would use the large side for recycling and the small side for trash, but I live in a "sorted for you" city.
We have this same can (purchased at 50% off because of an imperceptible scratch). We love it and use it strictly for recyclables.... glass goes into the small side, all the rest goes in the large side. Highly recommended.
I *JUST* ordered this from The Container Store -- it's on sale right now for $129. Hurry!!
* also, it's regularly $179 at The Container Store, so a better price than Macy's normally anyway.
I have the under sink pull out version of this and love it! I would highly recommend. It's also a lot cheaper than this one.
Would love to have something like this, but unfortunately I have a dog that will do anything to get into the garbage and would instantly knock over this lovely bin...grrrr
Seriously? Almost $200 for a trash can? I don't think I could justify it...
This is really nice but I dont' think I could justify spending $189 or event $129 (on sale) on a trash can. I just use a plastic square bin from Big Lots for our recycling and a paper bag from the grocery store (every few weeks, I'll leave the reusable bags at home and use theirs to be re-sued explicitly for garbage bag duty).
I hear you on the price. The reason I did decide to order this is because we don't have any room under the kitchen sink for recycling or trash bins. So it -has- to sit out. If it's going to sit out, I'd rather it not look "trashy" (pun intended!). I started to think of it more as a piece of furniture so as to cope with the cost. The sale was the deciding factor for me.
That said, I normally wouldn't be willing to pay that much for a trash can either, and if there were a way to fit one under the sink I really wouldn't care what it looks like.
Yup, it's a heafty price tag, but well worth it. I bought this exact model several months ago and it still makes me happy every time I use it. Simplehuman got this trash can right!

I bought the IKEA TROFAST (all white - $62) for my recycling and have been very happy with it!
I have to say, it's is pricey, but totally worth it. I have the single compartment version of this can and I love it. Not only does it look nice and is well designed and easy to clean, but the lid sits flush so my cats cannot push it open. As for the dog pushing the can over, I've seen people add weights to the bottom of the can to make it more difficult to knock over.
