Back in grade school, we were rewarded with peanut butter sandwiches for finishing our lunch - the ultimate treat for a five-year-old! Well, we still think this is a pretty good treat, and now that we're adults, we don't even need an excuse to get one. Do you love peanut butter sandwiches, too?
I'm a big fan of peanut butter with slices of ripe banana. Preferably that banana is right on the edge of being overly-ripe so that it really smooshes into the peanut butter. Yup, that's heaven right there!
I've recently come across several mentions of putting slices of fried bacon on peanut butter sandwiches. While this does seem to be a bit...gratuitous, I could also actually see the salty bacon and salty peanut butter going together quite well. Maybe?
What do you like on your peanut butter sandwich?

Peanut butter... the next best thing since sliced bread!
I went from liking peanut butter when I was younger to not liking it...and when I started running ultramarathons, I found it was the perfect food to eat before, during, and after a race.
Before a race, I like peanut butter and raspberry preserves on a bagel or homemade bread, during a race I'll dip pretzels in peanut butter, and post race, I LOVE peanut butter and banana (or peanut butter and almond butter).
It MUST be crunchy, though!
Peanut butter swirled with salsa is surprisingly good. Best smeared on wholewheat pita and toasted, kind of like a mini Thai pizza.
nothing's better than a PB & honey sandwich. I like to lightly toast the bread first.
But you've inspired me to go make a PB&banana right now.
I like my peanut butter best in cookie form, but in sandwich land, it's got to be on bread that can stand up to it, like a whole wheat bagel.
I swear, coffee is a great complement to pb. A sip of java, a bit of toast smeared with natural peanut butter. Best 4:00 snack ever.
Peanut butter on whole wheat toast is my favorite hangover food EVER.
Peanut butter and honey for me!!
My mom introduced me to peanut butter and bacon sandwiches, they are wonderfull, but not something I eat on a regular basis, I do like peanut butter toast in the mornings with thin slices of granny smith apple. My sister used to eat peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches but I thought that was gross and have never tried it.
Peanut butter honey banana = a small slice of heaven.
Peanut butter & nutella on bread then stick open faced in a toaster oven and crisp the top of the nutella/peanut butter. Freaking delicious!!
Peanut butter is good, but I prefer almond or cashew butters instead. My favorite way to enjoy either is on seeduction bread from Whole Foods with honey. Yum!!
peanut butter, banana and sambal(an indonesian hot pepper spread), mmmmmm!!!
PB Nutella Spoon=OMFG
Text editor fail. My first comment should read PB (plus) Nutella (plus) Spoon =OMFG
I eat a peanut butter and banana sandwich on cinnamon raisin bread every morning for breakfast. Yum!
sigh, peanut butter. by sig-other is deathly, deathly allergic to all nuts so I don't think I've had peanut butter in about 2 years. I wouldn't have thought about it otherwise, but once I bring it into the apartment there's a whole world of complication-- what knife I use, how I wash it (that sponge is now contaminated or quite possibly everything else in the dishwasher may have some on it), the possibility of having peanut butter on me (nevermind the fact that he won't kiss me for hours if I eat something with nuts!)
It's the allergy that's really gotten me into cooking over the years, actually. It can be really tricky to go out and eat-- if they fry ANYTHING with peanut oil in the kitchen, we have to leave. I also think a big reason he loves me is because I can make him nut-free Chinese food :)
Peanut butter and honey! The honey has to be the kind that crystalizes... what is that called? And the bread must be toasty hot. Mmmm, so good when it's all warm and gooey!
peanut butter with sliced fresh strawberries (a kind of deconstructed strawberry jam) on whole wheat breat is delicious.
OR my absolute favorite indulgence- peanut butter on toaster waffels, with sliced banana, sprinkled with chocolate chips. AMAZING!
and who can forget the classic...just a spoonful of peanut butter!
Love me some PB! My favorite sandwich is PB, honey and banana but a few times a week, my go to 'after-work' snack is a sliced apple dipped in peanut butter. Love it.
Even more so than pasta, PB is the ultimate comfort food. That's a big statement from an Italian.
I used to eat Peanut butter & pickle sandwiches all the time as a kid. Now, I usually go the peanut butter & banana route :) I also eat a spoonful of peanut w/chocolate chips on top as a dessert treat!
"the ultimate treat for a five-year-old!"
It makes me sad that peanuts, and in some places all nuts, have been banned from some schools because of allergies. It was such a delicious staple to lunches when most of us were children.
I'm not a big fan of peanuts or peanut butter, but I do like it on a nice toasty english muffin now and again, with butter or cream cheese.
Peanut butter and hot pepper jelly.
Peanut butter and honey or peanut butter and strawberry jam for me. I also LOVE it on pancakes with maple syrup (and a huge glass of milk because OMG, sticky.)
I actually had pb&j for breakfast! (On homemade oatmeal wheat bread, with fresh ground pb from Whole Foods, and homemade grape jelly, made by my own grandmother!) That's funny, because I don't usually eat it for breakfast, but I had a craving.
I also like pb & honey; or pb & banana. But when I do that I usually just eat it on 1 slice of bread, open face. When I was a kid I used to make pb sandwiches with mini-marshmallows, or marshallow cream! (My mother wasn't home when I fixed my lunch, can you tell?)
PB and chocolate syrup on whole grain bread.
Peanut butter dill pickles.

They have a restaurant in Brooklyn that only sells peanut butter sandwiches! They have all sorts of fun varieties. My personal favorite is a Chocolate Peanut Butter and cherry jam sandwich, stuffed with shredded coconut. It's peanut butter meets black forest cake. Mmm! They'll even cut the crusts off for you :)
They also sell their flavored peanut butters (maple, honey, spicy, dark chocolate, white chocolate, cinnamon raisin, etc) on their website.
Yes! Peanut butter and pickle sandwiches are so good.
Love peanut butter. My favorite is a sandwich with pb and tomatoes, or just stuffing a cherry tomato with the stuff. And peanut butter and sharp cheddar is good too. Or, you know, just with a spoon out of the jar--crackers may or may not be involved.
Peanut butter & butter on toast with a cup of coffee. One of my favorite breakfast foods.
Peanut butter and cheese is a good combo. That was one of my favorite snacks as a kid.
But no PB&J. I've never liked that combination.
Whole wheat toast fresh ground peanut butter slices of apple dusting of cinnamon!
Peanut butter quesadilla. Crunchy pb mixed with tupelo honey spread on flour tortilla->warm in skillet->top with slices of ripe banana->fold-over & re-warm. Great for breakfast or snax.
No ones mentioned this, so I'll just put it out there.
PB and cheesewhiz. It sounds disgusting but it's incredible. Seriously.
Peanut butter, bacon and mayonnaise was a staple in my house growing up. We also ate peanut butter and mayo on saltines, which I know sounds gross, but my whole family loved.
I love Peanut Butter and Jam! I used to eat for most of my lunches while in elementary through high school. Its sort of sad that a lot of schools don't allow peanut butter now because of kids with severe allergies. Maybe they'll grow up with some other favorite classic sandwich.
Oh, craving a fluffernutter now.
Peanut butter, honey, banana and crunchy wheat germ!
OR
peanut butter and apple butter.. mmm

I spent a month on a study abroad trip to Israel many years ago. Every few days we'd go to the market and pick up picnic lunch staples which included bread, cheeses, olives, and peanut butter. One day my professor dared me to have a peanut butter and olive sandwich. I went for it, and surprisingly it's become a favorite. The brininess of the olives cuts the sweetness of the peanut butter. It's a thing of beauty. Plus, whenever, I eat one it takes me back to all the various sites where we lunched in Israel.
Otherwise, I'm typically a peanut butter and strawberry jam gal...
My mom is from Ohio (don't know if this piece of info actually relates to her favorite PB combo but....when I was little, she always spread a piece of whole wheat bread with peanut butter and topped it with cheddar cheese and stuck it under the broiler. I was mortified and never tasted it. She still makes it from time to time. I preferred peanut butter spread on Triscuits.
Grilled peanut butter, banana, and nutella on cinnamon bread! Warm, crunchy, and gooey all at once!
Both my husband and I (and my two young boys) contend that a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is the world's most perfect food. With natural peanut butter, real fruit jam, and whole wheat bread, what else do you need?
I am also a fan of peanut butter and banana sandwiches, but I like my bananas firm. I also love peanut butter on celery sticks... amazing snack.

Grilled peanut butter and grape jam sandwiches. Fave after school snack.
Peanut Butter, banana and honey on toasted whole wheat bread is one of my favorites...
Slow day in the kitchen?
for those of you who like a little kick with your pb, try it with ginger preserves. So, so yummy.
Mostly, I like strawberry jelly. But occasionally I eat a weird snack I once found mentioned in a backpacking magazine-- peanut butter, hot sauce, and alfalfa sprouts. It sounded so weird that I had to try it. It was awesome! It's best with unsweetened peanut butter, though.
i love peanut butter, no jelly necessary for a great sandwich.
i just had a half a pb sandwich as a snack!
i was the weird kid growing up who hated (still do) pb & j. love j, love pb, just not together.
When I was little, my best friend's grandma would make us peanut butter and butter sandwiches. If that sounds gross, it kind of is. Just imagine your bite mark through two thick, gooey layers.
Hear me out...i love pb and honey on toast. I love pb on a banana with a cold glass of milk to wash it all down. But my FAVORITE all time is pb with dill pickle on a saltine cracker, again with the milk. It's delicious!
The three best things to put atop peanut butter are, in ascending order:
3. apple
2. salami
1. peanut butter!!!
Growing up, my mom always made something that we called "wonder waffles"- toasted eggo waffle, pb, bananas, cranberrys, almonds, topped with syrup. (she always arranged the toppings into smiley faces)
