Thanks to America's fear of fat, most of us opt for low- and no- fat options when we hit the dairy section in our local grocery stores. But why? Is skim milk really better for you? Maybe not. In fact, according to a study published in the journal Circulation, it might be time to put down the skim and reach, instead, for whole milk. Rejoice!
Things I can’t cut out of my life: weekly status reports with the finance team, my daughter’s pediatrician appointments (literally didn’t know kids went to the doctor this much until I became a parent), Saturday morning kettlebell class.
Things I can cut out of my life: stressing out about what to make for dinner, searching down every aisle for the right ingredients, waiting in line at the grocery store – all before even starting to cook.
Yes, it's Monday, but we're already dreaming about next weekend. And the biggest part of that dream right now happens to be a Bloody Mary made even better with one of the specialty spice blends from La Boîte, a biscuit and spice shop in New York City.
If there is anything that can make melted cheese on crispy bread better, it's hot peppers. This fontina and jalapeño grilled cheese boasts a spicy, salty, creamy trifecta similar to nachos, but with a more wholesome spin. When I have a hankering for something crunchy and melty, I can eat this sandwich without feeling weighed down afterward.
I don't know about you, but one of my least favorite things to do in the kitchen is rinse quinoa before cooking it. I know it's not that difficult — it's a small step that makes a big difference for quinoa, rice, and other grains — but it's enough of a pain that I sometimes skip it. However, I have high hopes that this new colander from OXO will make things just a little bit easier.
I love to bake, but one of my biggest challenges is finding a place to store all my various cake pans. I can't give up my bundt pan; I love my 9-inch pans for layer cakes (even if I only attempt those on a very sporadic basis); and I really do need that springform pan — how else am I going to perfect Ottolenghi's cauliflower cake?
I could, however, replace all of those with this one pan from IKEA. Even better? It's less than $10.
Welcome spring by punching up your salads with greens that are not only delicious, but also ridiculously good for you. There is no need to feel like you are laboriously rotating through three or four salad greens in the name of health. And while the always-popular spinach and arugula are certainly delicious, there are so many other wonderful options to choose from.
If you've struggled to keep a garden alive in the past, or forget what you've done year to year to make your garden successful, we have a little trick that might help you finally get things under control: the Gardener's One Line a Day from Chronicle Books.
While I'm not one to turn my back on the nostalgia of a simple grilled cheese sandwich (Okay, maybe with a little mayonnaise...), I have to admit a straightforward classic won't cut it for me as a meal. This Muenster grilled cheese, generously filled out with avocado and baby arugula, is satisfying enough to both my eyes and my belly to qualify as lunch or a light dinner. The elements that make it so substantial — smooth Muenster, creamy avocado, and a tangy combination of mayonnaise and Dijon mustard — also give it a melt-in-your mouth flavor and texture.
