In the middle of a tour of Vermont dairies, I happened upon this gem of a kitchen store down the street from the Ben & Jerry's factory. Built around the cutting boards and knife blocks made by local woodworkers for over 60 years, the store sells nearly everything for the most important room in the home, curated to include local artisans.

A space that combines the selection of a national brand with the freshness of a log cabin in the woods, I found the atmosphere completely welcoming. Products arranged in collections take on that no-nonsense feeling of a kitchen supply store: a pegboard of cookie cutters, steel shelving of glasses, cases of knives. Vats of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar are available for bottling. The Vermont-based businesses are scattered throughout: J.K. Adams cutting boards and slate trays, of course, but also a wonderful collection of locally-made spice blends from cultures near and far. Whether you're on the cheese trail or peeping leaves, stop by and they'll welcome you with open arms.

Over the years, the store expanded and in May 2001, opened as a source for tools for the home cook. Located on three floors, the Kitchen Store boasts a staff who love everything from the tasty cheeses fresh from the neighboring farms to the intricacies of the newest java brewmaster.
